Durable vs. disposable

Use a good quality container like an lock-n-lock, ammo can, or metal bison that can withstand most elements. Disposable food containers bought from the grocery store (such as Gladware) and recycled food containers (such as yogurt containers) do not withstand the elements. They’re better used for your leftover meatloaf.

2

Location, location, location

Hide location is as important as container selection. Every cache container works best when placed in protected spots, out of the elements.

3

Cache inside your cache, if you can

If the geocache is big enough, place the logbook inside a smaller container to help keep it dry.

4

Bag the extra bags

Plastic baggies do not protect logbooks as well as you may think. Pencils and pens often puncture bags after just a few finds, so use with caution.

5

"Neither Rain, Nor Sleet, Nor Dark Of Night..."

All-weather logbooks allow logbooks to be signed no matter what mood Mother Nature is in (and they're available from Shop Geocaching!)

6

Silica packets don't gel

Contrary to what you might think, silica gel packets do NOT keep moisture at bay in rainy environments. If the cache container gets wet, the gel explodes and makes a soggy mess even worse. It’s better to just use an airtight container.

7

Near the coast, avoid metal containers

In coastal environments, plastic may work better than metal because the salt air acts like acid, and poor-quality metal containers rust very quickly.

8

Again, durable vs. disposable

In extremely cold environments, WATERTIGHT containers (ammo cans or good-quality plastic) are a must due to temperature fluctuations. Less durable containers simply cannot withstand harsh elements.

9

The pencil is mightier than the pen

Additionally, in cold climates, place pencils in cache containers rather than pens since the ink inside pens can easily freeze.

10

Cache maintenance is for WINNERS!

No matter the type of container used, there is no substitute for regular maintenance trips to keep your cache in great shape!
