African Elephant

African Elephant

So you are an African Elephant! Nice trunk! The African Elephant or Loxodonta form a close family bond, except for bull males. They're herbivores, great swimmers and a favourite animal for people world wide. To this day, African Elephants are poached for those stunning Ivory Tusks, which are worth a fortune on black markets as decorations or ingredients in traditional medicine. Thankfully, they're classed as at risk but not endangered.

Lion

Lion

Your Royal Highness the King of the Jungle! You are the mighty Lion or Panthera Leo. Turns out you are relatively sociable, a carnivore and have fantastic golden locks. Once a prized trophy for its pelts, the African Lion is now strictly protected in many parts of Africa. As a result, Lions are at risk but not endangered and their population is stable.

Leopard

Leopard

You are the second biggest African Big Cat. The Leopard or Panthera Pardus Pardus is a predominately solitary nocturnal carnivore that lives in trees. Cool hey! Despite being the smallest of the African Big 5, a Leopard still packs quite a punch so it's advised to steer clear. Another prized pelt from the Animal kingdom, Leopards are at threat in the wild mostly from poaching and habitat disruption.

Cape Buffalo

Cape Buffalo

So you're a Cape Buffalo? Otherwise called Syncerus caffer, the Cape Buffalo is the most dangerous of all the Big 5. They're responsible for more recorded deaths every year than the other four combined! A prized hunting trophy thanks to their size and aggression, the Cape Buffalo is by far the most numerous of all the Big 5.

If you want to join the herd and volunteer with the Cape Buffalo, check out Frontier's South African Wildlife Conservation project!

Black/White Rhinoceros

Black/White Rhinoceros

Good to see you're a Rhino to help make up their numbers! The White (Ceratotherium simum) and Black (Diceros bicornis) are far and away the most endangered of the Big 5, thanks to their amazing toughness and that prized Horn. The mighty herbivores are still threatened by extensive poaching and habitat loss. Once common all across subsaharan Africa, Rhino numbers now estimated to be in the hundreds.
