1

Make sure your subject is comfortable.

Once they're relaxed, draw focus to your subject's eyes. They don't say the "eyes are the window to the soul" for nothing!

2

Plan for lighting.

Think about the time of day you'll be shooting and the direction of the light. Is it artificial or natural sunlight? Proper lighting will have a huge impact on your finished photo.

3

Pay attention to composition.

Portraits are so much more than just a close-up of a face! Zoom in or out and move around your subject (or have them move) until you find an interesting frame and position. Don't crop out any important body parts, you can always crop later.

4

Remove the clutter.

Portraits should focus on the subject - so make sure the background isn't a distraction with bright or disturbing objects.

5

Don't be afraid to retouch.

Edit your photo using with easy-to-use photo apps (like Facetune!). Simple tweaks will correct mistakes or minor blemishes and take your images to the next level.

6

Don't over do it.

You still want the person to look natural, so avoid looking plastic with unrealistic white teeth or oversmoothed skin. The aim is for your subject to look like his or herself, only turned up a notch.

7

Think differently.

Try an unconventional perspective or angle, or a prop to make the image interesting. Play around: there's so much more to portrait photography than your basic selfie!
