Make sure the background is awesome

Speaking of bathrooms, keep them out of your frame. Instead, get something cool in your shot (unlike this clueless hipster). Seek out a balcony with a stunning landscape behind it, surround yourself with beautiful people or a shiny car. Basically: try to make people jealous.

Unless your biceps are so impressive (you know who you are) they need to be featured, relax your arm, and hold your smartphone far enough away from your face so that your arms aren't in the pic.
