Divergent fan theory-Al was divergent
Divergent fan theory-Al was divergent
It probably doesn't make sense right now, but read on and I'll explain.

So, I was thinking about divergent one day (that's what I think of when I'm bored) and I thought "It was a bit extreme to kill himself, wasn't it?" Then it hit me. Amar (Four's training instructor) and George (Tori's brother) allegedly committed suicide by jumping of the side in the Dauntless compound, then were found alive in Allegiant (because the outside world rescued them because they were divergent. What if the same happened with Al because he was divergent?
Throughout the book, Al seems to not be entirely Dauntless. He shows several times that he is kind. He has the potential to be a good fighter, but seems to hate fighting. Signs point to him having aptitude for Amity.
Before you say "Oh, Erudite Ravenclaw Raccoon, you got it wrong. Al ONLY has aptitude for Amity.", let me point out he also shows acts of bravery, such as when he faces Eric when he is being unfair to Christina. So, what I'm saying is that he had aptitude for both, but picked Dauntless because his parents admired them (mentioned on visiting day). Also, the divergent seem to have a habit of getting themselves into sticky situations. Say, like this:
See what I mean? There are also phrases that imply he has aptitude for both Dauntless and Amity, such as:
"He has a kind face. Maybe he is too kind for Dauntless."
Tris Prior
"He is the last person I expected to break down."
Tris Prior
"I won't be ranked last, but I won't have to hurt anyone anymore."
Al
Also, Eric picks him for his capture the flag team. This shows he might have a Dauntless aptitude that Eric favours. Al also mentions that courage isn't 'hurting people for no reason', showing Amity aptitude.
Finally, Al's name means this:
'Noble' implies Dauntless bravery, whereas 'bright' implies the cheerfulness of Amity (before you tell me this means Erudite, he mentions when first talking to Christina that he slept through maths class.)
Overall, the cliff 'suicide', the acts of kindness, the acts of bravery, the name, they all point towards him being divergent. Anyway, divergent or not, it still broke my heart when he left the triology.
