The 'Big Bang Theory' spin-off has more differences than similarities from the original series.
The 'Big Bang Theory' spin-off has more differences than similarities from the original series.
It's Sheldon Cooper's 'wonder years'
"Young Sheldon" is not the sitcom with a laugh track that "The Big Bang Theory" is. Remember "The Wonder Years", the hit comedy-drama series that ran from the late 80s to the late 90s? "Young Sheldon" is a lot like that. Fans of "Big Bang Theory" already know Sheldon was a child prodigy and graduated summa cum laude by the time he was only 14. "Young Sheldon" takes viewers to Sheldon's high school years which began when he was only 9.
Iain Armitage is more than just adorable
He was a hit with viewers on HBO's award-winning mini-series, "Big Little Lies." Now as young Sheldon Cooper, Iain Armitage looks primed for bigger things. The rising child sensation has got Sheldon's characteristics down pat: intellectually superior to just about everyone else including his parents and teachers, his no filter personality is also naturally lacking in social skills. Being as adorable and charming as say, Macaulay Culkin circa "Home Alone," audiences should love Iain just the same.
Sheldon's mom looks very familiar
That's because actress Zoe Perry playing Mary Cooper is the daugher of Laurie Metcalf, who plays the same role in n"Big Bang Theory." Although constantly worried about how Sheldon will fare as the youngest high schooler in their community, she remains very supportive of her young gifted son and wants him to grow up as normal as possible.
Those 80s songs
The pilot episode kicks off with Dire Straits "Walk of Life" and it only got better, with snippets of Steve Winwood's "Higher Love" and Poison's "Nothin ' But A Good Time" also played. Not the type of hit tunes you normally hear on films and TV shows set during the same period, here's hoping the rest of the season will be filled with more soundtrack surprises.
Not your usual coming-of-age story
Because Sheldon is a "once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science," his growing up years is certainly not your average coming-of-age story. Will he eventually adjust to his less cerebral classmates and teachers? How will people react to his initial inventions? Who will be his first crush in school? And yes, will he hear him say, "Bazinga!" too? We can't wait to find out as the series progresses.
