7 Reasons Australian Athletes Won't Be Moving Into The Olympic Village This Year

People have been voicing concerns about Zika virus, drug-resistant bacteria, and other safety concerns for months, but now, Australia is saying no to the Olympic Village. Here are a few things that failed to pass their inspection:

Leaking pipes: The Australian Olympic Committee went to inspect the Olympic Village to make sure it was safe for athletes, but what they found were a lot of plumbing and electrical issues.

2

Spot flooding: When the AOC performed a stress test, running several toilets and faucets at once, water began pouring down some of the walls.

3

Blocked Toilets: Similarly, the toilets had trouble coping under stress as well.

4

Unlit Stairwells: I think anyone would agree, this one is a pretty major safety hazard. (These stairs in a historic area of Rio are pretty cool, though.)

5

An indeterminate opening date: The Australian team was supposed to move in July 21st, but after determining the building's unreadiness and receiving no answer on when it would be ready to move into, it looks like the Australian team may be in hotels for the entirety of the games.

6

Gas smells: These also arose during the stress test, and we don't think it was just from the clogged toilets.

7

Wiring shorting out: This also occurred due to the flooding during the stress test, and if there's one thing you definitely don't want, it's electrocuted athletes.
