7.30am, Saturday March 3: latest roads update from Derbyshire County Council

We've already reopened some routes which were previously closed. Now also open:

  • B6025 Alfreton Road, Tibshelf to Westhouse
  • B5006 Derby Road, Ticknall
  • Coton Lane, Lullington
  • Unnamed road, linking Coton Road and Lullington village

Our teams have worked tirelessly on the A624 Chapel to Glossop road and this will be reopened shortly once an abandoned car which is blocking the road has been moved.
We've gritted all primary routes (except for roads we can't get to) across the county from 3am this morning and are tackling the secondary network now.
We've got every farmer contractor out helping us this morning and we're heading for smaller villages which have been cut off by the snow with JCBs.
We're doing absolutely everything we can to make major inroads into the backlog of closures today.

Currently remaining closed are:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat and Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
  • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
  • A515 Buxton to Newhaven
  • A5012 Via Gellia (Pikehall to Newhaven)
  • Rotherham Road - Harthill Road to Worksop Rd
  • Main Rd - Owler Barr to Barlow
  • Rotherham Road - Stoney Houghton to Green Lane
  • Rosliston Road South, Rosliston
  • Hallcroft Avenue, Overseal

Only one main route into Buxton is currently open - the town can be accessed via the A6 from both the north and south.

9.04pm: Lyme Park's unsing heroes

A team of four hard working rangers at Disley's Lyme Park have been braving 6am starts, -13 wind chills, -6 daytime temperatures and lots of snow to carry out essential work.
Fallen trees, snow drifts, relentless gritting, hungry deer and frozen machinery are just some of the challenges the outdoors team have been facing.
Lyme’s Lead Ranger, Chris Dunkerley said: “Looking after a place like Lyme is a complex job for our rangers and the work certainly doesn’t stop in bad weather. In fact, that’s usually when we’re at our busiest and face some of the biggest challenges.
"I’m proud of the hardworking efforts of my team at Lyme and their dedication to keep the estate and its wildlife safe during the worst weather we’ve experienced for many years."
Lyme will remain closed on Saturday (March 3) and visitors are advised to check the website for latest updates. Photo: National Trust/Chris Dunkerley.

8.30pm: Latest roads update from Derbyshire County Council

A number of routes which were earlier closed due to snow have reopened - but strong winds and snow drifts are still hampering efforts in the High Peak.

Roads now passable with care are:

  • Rushup Edge, near Castleton
  • Winnats Pass, near Castleton
  • A623
  • A5270 Coalpit Lane, south of Buxton
  • A5004 Long Hill, Whaley Bridge to Buxton
  • A511 Ashby Road East, Bretby
  • A515 Ashbourne Road, Sudbury
  • Baslow Rd - Holmesfield to Owler Barr
  • School Ln/Top Lane, Wadshelf
  • B6050, side of Robin Hood pub
  • Kedleston Road, between Weston Underwood and Church Road, Quarndon

Remaining closed are:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat and Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
  • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
  • A624 Chapel to Glossop
  • A515 Buxton to Newhaven
  • A5012 Via Gellia (Pikehall to Newhaven)
  • Rotherham Road - Harthill Road to Worksop Rd
  • Main Rd - Owler Barr to Barlow
  • Rotherham Road - Stoney Houghton to Green Lane
  • B5006 Derby Road, Ticknall
  • Rosliston Road South, Rosliston
  • Hallcroft Avenue, Overseal
  • Coton Lane, Lullington
  • Unnamed road, linking Coton Road and Lullington village
  • B6025 Alfreton Road, Tibshelf to Westhouse

Only one main route into Buxton is currently open - the town can be accessed via the A6 from both the north and south. Snow drifts are hampering attempts to clear other routes - notably the A515, A53 and A537 Cat & Fiddle. These are not expected to open within the next 24 hours.
Glossop is also suffering major congestion. Highways England has closed the A628 Woodhead Pass, meaning drivers are seeking alternative routes and heading towards the town. Motorists are advised to avoid travel into the town to ease congestion and enable gritters and farmer contractors to clear main roads of drifting snow.
Gritting teams are continuing to concentrate on principal routes in the High Peak area. In other areas of the county, the primary network has been gritted and the secondary network will be treated where possible.
Due to the ongoing severe conditions a countywide multi-agency approach is now being taken to tackle the situation with agencies including the council, emergency services, hospitals, health providers and Public Health England - the first time this has happened since 2010.
A county council spokesperson said: "Our advice is very clear: Please avoid travel in the north of the county wherever possible. If you do have to travel, make sure your headlights are on at all times.
"The extreme low temperatures mean the large quantities of grit already spread on the county's roads don't work as effectively.
"There remains the possibility of isolated snow showers overnight, bringing 2cm-5cm of snow in some areas. Strong winds mean snow drifts are expected to remain a problem - particularly in exposed areas."

2.50pm - no trains in or out of Buxton

2.27pm - latest update from Derbyshire County Council

Strong winds and freezing temperatures are still causing major disruption on the county's roads − particularly in the High Peak.

Only one main route into Buxton is currently open − the town can be accessed via the A6 from both the north and south.

Snow drifts are hampering attempts to clear other routes into Buxton − notably the A515, A53 and A537 Cat & Fiddle. These routes are not expected to open within the next 24 hours.

Glossop is also suffering major congestion. Highways England has closed the A628 Woodhead Pass, meaning drivers are seeking alternative routes and heading towards the town.

The main roads from Glossop into Derbyshire are currently impassable due to drifting snow and we're strongly advising motorists to avoid travel into the town to ease congestion and enable our gritters and farmer contractors to clear main roads of drifting snow.

The current list of closed roads is:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat and Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
  • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
  • Rushup Edge, near Castleton
  • Winnats Pass, near Castleton
  • A624 Chapel to Glossop
  • A623 Chapel to Calver
  • A628 Woodhead Pass
  • A515 Buxton to Newhaven
  • A5012 Via Gellia (Pikehall to Newhaven)
  • A5270 Coalpit Lane south of Buxton
  • A6 at Taddington
  • A5004 Long Hill, Whaley Bridge to Buxton
  • Rotherham Road - Harthill Road to Worksop Rd
  • Baslow Rd - Holmesfield to Owler Barr
  • Main Rd - Owler Barr to Barlow
  • School Ln/Top Lane, Wadshelf
  • B6050, side of Robin Hood pub
  • Rotherham Road - Stoney Houghton to Green Lane
  • B5006 Derby Road, Ticknall

  • Hallcroft Avenue, Overseal
  • Coton Lane, Lullington
  • Unnamed road, linking Coton Road and Lullington village
  • B6025 Alfreton Road, Tibshelf to Westhouse

Our gritting teams are continuing to concentrate on principal routes in the High Peak area. These are a smaller number of vital routes that we concentrate on in severe conditions.

In other areas of the county we're out gritting the primary network and will treat the secondary network where possible.

Buxton is badly affected with many main routes closed - also heavily hit are Bolsover, Chesterfield, the north Derbyshire Dales, and NE Derbyshire districts. In these areas we're having to focus our efforts on keeping principal roads clear.

These are a smaller number of vital routes that we concentrate on in severe conditions.

Adult Community Education Classes are cancelled today and this evening (Friday 2 March) at the following venues:

  • Ashbourne
  • Ashford in the Water - today's upholstery class is cancelled

Due to the ongoing severe conditions a countywide multi-agency approach is now being taken to tackle the situation with agencies including us, emergency services, hospitals, health providers and Public Health England - the first time this has happened since 2010.

Our advice is very clear: Please avoid travel in the north of the county wherever possible. If you do have to travel, make sure your headlights are on at all times.

Services are currently running on this route.
Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said: “We have seen worsening conditions across many parts of our network with the heavy snow and ice causing snow drifts, frozen signalling equipment and damage to our trains, and the weather forecast is showing that the severe weather will continue into this afternoon and evening.

9.05am - wonderful community spirit

Amongst all the snow disruption, there's also some wonderful examples of community spirit being alive and well in Derbyshire.
In the High Peak, a Facebook group has been set up so people can offer their services and help those in need. Find it here.

7.20am - latest roads update from Derbyshire County Council

Fallen trees are adding to the difficulties on the county's roads after another night of high winds and exceptionally low temperatures.

Our gangs cleared a fallen tree which was blocking the A6 near Morrisons at Buxton in the early hours, but another large tree has now come down at Topley Pike − again blocking the route. We're working to clear this as soon as possible.

High winds still continue to cause huge snow drifts across the county - blowing snow back on to routes as soon as we're clearing them.

The A623, which was previously closed between Chapel and Calver, has now reopened and is passable with care.
But we have a growing list of closures in other areas, including:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat and Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
  • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
  • Rushup Edge, near Castleton
  • Winnats Pass, near Castleton
  • A6 Buxton to Chapel
  • A624 Chapel to Glossop

Impassable routes:

  • A515 Buxton to Newhaven
  • A5012 Via Gellia (Pikehall to Newhaven)
  • A5270 Coalpit Lane south of Buxton
  • A6 at Taddington
  • A5004 Long Hill, Whaley Bridge to Buxton
  • Rotherham Road - Harthill Road to Worksop Rd
  • Baslow Rd - Holmesfield to Owler Barr
  • Main Rd - Owler Barr to Barlow
  • School Ln/Top Lane, Wadshelf
  • B6050, side of Robin Hood pub
  • Rotherham Road - Stoney Houghton to Green Lane
  • B5006 Derby Road, Ticknall
  • Rosliston Road South, Rosliston
  • Kedleston Road, between Weston Underwood and Church Road, Quarndon
  • A511 Ashby Road East, Bretby
  • A515 Ashbourne Road, Sudbury
  • Hallcroft Avenue, Overseal
  • Coton Lane, Lullington
  • Unnamed road, linking Coton Road and Lullington village
  • B6025 Alfreton Road, Tibshelf to Westhouse

Buxton is badly affected with many main routes closed - also heavily hit are Bolsover, Chesterfield, the north Derbyshire Dales, and NE Derbyshire districts. In these areas we're having to focus our efforts on keeping principal roads clear. These are a smaller number of vital routes that we concentrate on in severe conditions.

Due to the ongoing severe conditions a countywide multi-agency approach is now being taken to tackle the situation with agencies including us, emergency services, hospitals, health providers and Public Health England - the first time this has happened since 2010.

Our advice is very clear: AVOID TRAVEL IN THE NORTH OF THE COUNTY WHEREVER POSSIBLE. If you do have to travel, make sure your headlights are on at all times.

The extreme low temperatures mean the large quantities of grit already spread on the county's roads don't work as effectively.

Temperatures are again set to remain below freezing throughout the day, with isolated snow showers. Strong winds mean snow drifts are again expected to be a major problem − particularly in exposed areas.

1.55pm - latest update from Derbyshire County Council

Due to the ongoing severe conditions a countywide multi-agency approach is now being taken to tackle the situation with agencies including us, emergency services, hospitals, health providers and Public Health England − the first time this has happened since 2010.

We're expecting more snow this afternoon with winds of up to 40mph from the east which will continue into tomorrow and cause drifting in many areas.

The Met Office advises that the wind chill factor could be -13C.

Motorists are urged to avoid travel in the north of the county wherever possible as an increasing number of main roads are impassable due to continuous snow fall and high winds causing snow to drift.

Abandoned vehicles and jack-knifed lorries are also causing an issue where roads had been passable with care.

Roads in the south of the county are passable with care but conditions - including on main roads - are treacherous despite ongoing efforts to grit and plough during the day.

Temperatures plummeting to around -6C meaning that the large quantities of grit already spread on the county's roads don't work as effectively in such extreme low temperatures.

Motorists are urged not to travel in this part of the county unless absolutely essential and if they do have to travel, keep headlights on at all times.

Closed routes include, but are not limited to:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat and Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth
  • B6105 Torside Glossop to the A628
  • Rushup Edge, near Castleton
  • Winnats Pass, near Castleton
  • A6 Buxton to Chapel
  • A623 Calver to Chapel
  • A624 Chapel to Glossop

Impassable routes:

  • A515 Buxton to Newhaven

Our gritting teams have been out continuously with ploughs trying to keep principal routes clear in the north of the county. These are a smaller number of vital routes we concentrate on when weather is most severe.

Primary routes are being treated in the south but the persistent snow means roads were covered again shortly afterwards.

Work to grit and plough further continues and our crews will be assisted by farmer contractors helping to clear the roads.

1.52pm - NHS staff going the extra mile

Staff at the Buxton NHS community mental health team have been going the extra mile to ensure they can continue offering vital services to patients across the High Peak.
Pictured is Karen Allen, an NHS secretary/admin worker who has been with the Fountain Street-based service for over 20 years.
Unwilling to be deterred by the snow, she showed her incredible dedication to NHS patients by travelling to work today - on a tractor.
Dr David Walker, a consultant psychiatrist, said: "I really feels this shows the amazing lengths NHS staff in Buxton are going to in order to keep services going in this extreme weather.
"It has been a difficult couple of days with the weather, so the efforts of our team have been of huge help to our patients."

7.18am - Roads update from Derbyshire County Council

Motorists are urged to avoid travel in the north of the county wherever possible as an increasing number of main roads are impassable due to continuous snow fall and 30-40mph winds causing snow to drift - meaning many people's journeys will be blocked.

Closed routes include but are not limited to:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat & Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth

Road closures

Major disruption is expected on roads in some areas of the county this morning with extremely low temperatures causing treacherous conditions.
Temperatures plummeted to minus nine degrees Celsius overnight − meaning grit fails to stop working fully to melt snow and ice.
Gritters and ploughs have been out throughout the night, and farmer contractors will be working to help clear routes this morning.
Conditions are particularly bad in the High Peak, where a number of routes remain closed:

  • A57 Snake Pass
  • A6024 Holme Moss
  • A53 Leek Road
  • A537 Cat & Fiddle
  • Monks Road between Chunal and Charlesworth

Colleagues at Highways England have also closed:

  • A628 Woodhead Pass

There is a strong possibility of ice - even on surfaces which have been repeatedly treated over the last couple of days in readiness for the so-called "Beast from the East".
County council advice is to travel if essential in the affected areas.

Bus service disruptions

A number of bus services in the High Peak are currently suspended because of the conditions.
