The national picture
- The new grades are 9-1, replacing the traditional A*-U
- Exams based on final exams rather than coursework
- The overall pass rate has increased by 0.5% to 66.9%
- About 4% of entries received the top grade 9
The Belper School
- Headteacher, Martyn Cooper, said the results set ‘new records’ in some cases.
- Mr Cooper said: “Belper School is delighted with the GCSE results.
- "Results show an improvement on last year with 5+ English and maths going up to 48 per cent and 4+ English and maths rising to 71 per cent.
- “Individual students, as well as the various faculties, have seen some really strong performances which, coupled with some very pleasing A-level results, have made it a successful summer for Belper. We are very proud and happy with these results.”
Ormiston Ilkeston Enterprise Academy
- Overall, more than half (53 per cent) of students achieved a grade 4 or better in English and maths - up by nine per cent on last year.
- For maths alone, 65 per cent achieved at least a grade 4 or higher - an increase of 12 per cent on last year.
- The academy also recorded more students than ever secured a grade 9.
- Principal at the school, Nia Salt, said: “The results achieved by our students today show significant improvements in the key subjects and are a testament to the hard work and commitment of our students, staff and the whole school community. We are very proud of their students and look forward to building on this over the next 12 months.”

Outwood Academy Newbold
- The school reported ‘record breaking results’.
- A total of 59 per cent of students achieved grade 5+ in both English and maths, up 10 per cent on last year.
- Three quarters of all students achieved grade 4+ in English and maths
- Top pupil Bea Leverett achieved a grade 9 in eight subjects and two grade 8s and Theo hall who achieved six grade 9s and an A*.
- Principal at the school, Steve Roberts, said: “This year was about working with and supporting students as they adapt to and reach the new benchmark standards set nationally in the reformed GCSEs. The resilience, focus and determination to be successful will stand our students in good stead in the future.”
St Mary’s Catholic High School, Chesterfield
- A total of 80 per cent of pupils achieved a grade and above in English and maths
- While 62 per cent of pupils also achieved 9-5 passes including English and maths
- And 34 per cent of pupils achieved 9-7 with 121 results at a 9.
- Headteacher, Maria Dengate, said: “The results are a testament to the incredible hard work of our pupils, the support of parents and carers and the dedication of the school’s outstanding staff. Our aim is that every pupil fulfils his or her potential and has the qualifications to move on to the next stage of their education or career.
- “We are extremely proud of all of our young people.”
David Nieper Academy, Alfreton
- 76 per cent of students achieved a grade 4+ in English language and literature
- 70 per cent of students achieved a distinction in BTEC sport, dance and drama
- 71% achieved a grade 9-4 in religious studies
- For several individual students, there were some exceptional personal achievements including, head girl Emily Bush, from Alfreton, who attained the new top grade 9 (an old A**) for English and geography, as well as an A* in product design and a further grade 8 (old A*) and three grade 7’s.
- Dr Kathryn Hobbs, headteacher at David Nieper Academy, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many smiling faces this morning. It has been an anxious wait particularly with the uncertainty of the new qualifications and grading systems, but the hard work has paid off and we are proud of our students’ achievements. We wish you all well and look forward to welcoming some of you back into our sixth form in September."
Brookfield Community School, Chesterfield
- Almost 80 per cent of students achieved a grade between 9-4 (old A-C) in English and maths
- And more than 55 per cent of students achieved a grade between 9-5 in English and Maths.
- Pupil Frazer Martin deserves special recognition for achieving grade 9s (the highest possible grade) in all of his qualifications.
- Frazer said: “I am really, really pleased and couldn’t be happier. I am looking forward to starting Sixth Form at Brookfield to further my knowledge at A-level.”
Acting headteacher, Mr Richard Cronin said: "I am delighted for our students. Their commitment to learning has resulted in some fantastic achievements. I would also like to thank our staff, who have worked incredibly hard to ensure the new, more challenging, GCSE specifications have been delivered to a high standard. As well as producing very good GCSE outcomes, we also work hard on producing well-rounded young adults. I wish all of our Year 11 students the very best for the future. Congratulations to everyone!"
Highfields School, Matlock
- 70% of students achieved passes in English and maths at the new grade 4 or above
- Seventeen students gained eight or more passes at grades 7-9
- Two students achieved seven or more grade 9s and close to 40 per cent of the year group recorded at least one grade at 7 or above. Many other students made excellent progress overall.
Head of Year 11, Nicola Gresswell said: ‘These results represent the outcome of much hard work on the part of staff and students, and the support of parents. It is great to see youngsters achieving so many higher grades. However, it is also good to see the progress of students across the ability range, as we look to ensure we have given them the best possible platform for the future.’
Co-headteacher, Peter Cole, said: “we are delighted that despite the uncertainty around the introduction of the new, more demanding GCSEs, the vast majority of our students achieved results which they can be very proud of. Crucially, these results enable our students to progress, as planned, to their intended next steps in education, employment or training.”

- 43 per cent of students achieved a grade 5 in English and maths
- 66 per cent of students achieved a grade 4 in English and maths

Saint John Houghton Catholic Voluntary Academy, Ilkeston
- A total of 80 per cent of students achieved a 4 or above in English, 32 per cent of students achieved a 7 or above in English and a total of 72 per cent of students achieved a 4 or above in English and maths.
- 77 per cent of students achieved a 4 or above in maths while 77 per cent achieved a 4 or above in Science (with students achieving at least two grades in science).
- One student, Ben Langfield, achieved an impressive four grade 9s and six grade 8s. He said: “I worked really hard for these grades. I’m so happy but feeling a bit overwhelmed too!"
- Ben will now go to George Spencer Academy Sixth Form to study history, English literature and economics.
- He added: “I’m looking forward to going to study A-levels and after that I hope I will go to university.”
- Headteacher, Joan McCarthy, said: “We have seen improvements in all areas in this year’s GCSE results and we would like to congratulate our students and thank our dedicated staff for all of their hard work. We would also like to thank all of our students’ families for their support and the local primary schools. We are sure that our students will go on to great things and we wish them the best of luck for the future.”

The Bolsover School
- "With the increased difficulty in these new style GCSE examinations, we are really pleased to report that our results yet again are likely to be in line if not above national averages," the school said.
- 60.2 per cent of students achieved a grade 4+ (standard pass) in English and maths. A further 37.9 per cent achieved grade 5+
- Six students achieved a combined 22 grade 9’s in a range of subjects.
- Tim Croft, executive principal, said: “I would like to recognise the phenomenal team effort of all the governors, staff, parents and families and last but not least the students in their achievements at the Bolsover School. Without all of these key stakeholders, these results would not be possible. I look forward to working with all of you to continue to take the school from strength to strength”
Friesland School, Sandiacre
- The school says the attainment measures are 'the best ever achieved'.
- The average grades was a 5 (strong pass).
- "It is difficult to comment on our overall progress figure with great certainty at this stage but we do believe it will be a positive figure," the school said.
- One in four of every grade achieved was 7, 8 or 9
- Headteacher, Peter Monk, said: ‘I am extremely proud today of the achievements of students and staff alike as it is a team approach that has led to this success. It has been an extremely challenging year for our Year 11, not least because of the passing away, in tragic circumstances, of a much-loved member of the year group, James Turnbull, at the midpoint of the school year. They are a very special year group who have wanted to achieve the school’s best ever results as a fitting tribute to James.’

Eckington School, north Derbyshire
- Virtually all students gained at least one A*-G/9-1.
- The percentage of students gaining 9-4 (equivalent to A*-C) in English and mathematics this year is 61.7%, an increase of 5.7% from last year.
- The percentage of students gaining a grade 5 or above in English and mathematics also showed an improvement from last year, up 7.3%, to 38.3% this year.
- 92.5% of students gained at least one 9-4/A*-C grade
