Barry Delaney turned more than a few heads when he wore a bright neon dress to the funeral of his friend, Kevin Elliott, who was killed in action in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan five years ago.

But he was actually keeping a promise he had made to Elliot three years before. Elliot, nervous about returning to Afghanistan, made a deal with Delaney. If he was killed overseas, Delaney would have to wear a bright pink dress with green polka dots to his funeral.

Delaney kept his promise when Elliott died. Unable to find a pink dress with green polka dots, he selected a neon green dress with pink knee socks instead. On the day of the funeral, he knelt by Elliott's casket to ask if he liked the dress and became overwhelmed when he realized Elliott would never answer him.

Delaney felt it was his duty to keep his promise to his friend and never worried for a moment what people might think of his decision to wear the dress. He said of his friend: "He was such a livewire, always full of energy. Every moment with Kevin was a good time, he wanted to put a smile on everyone's face." He hoped the dress would make people laugh the way Elliott did.

Elliott would definitely be proud.
