The Mona Lisa is arguably the most famous portrait of all time.

Painted by Leonardo Da Vinci between 1503 and 1506, the Mona Lisa is believed to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of an Florentine Silk Merchant

French Scientist Pascal Cotte claims that he's found another painting beneath the Mona Lisa.

The original is on the right, the hidden image on the left.

Cotte has studied the Mona Lisa for ten years, and claims that he found the hidden image using reflective light technology.

He shone intense lights on the Mona Lisa and saw what the work reflected. The technique is new, and quite controversial.

The Mona Lisa is most famous for her direct gaze, said to follow you around the room when you're in her presence. The hidden picture is said to reveal a face looking off to the side. The new image also lacks her famous smile.

Cotte claims that the image he has uncovered cast doubt as to the identity of Mona Lisa. He says that the image below the image we know is of a completely different woman.

Some experts aren't convinced. Whether Cotte is right or not about Mona Lisa's identity, it's fascinating to see Da Vinci's process, and think about what he might have wanted to improve upon.
