This morning, Donald Trump announced that his running mate for the 2016 presidential election will be Indiana Governor Mike Pence.

After considering Newt Gingrich and Chris Christie, Trump ultimately settled on Pence and offered him the position yesterday evening.

Trump said of the three: "I think Newt (Gingrich) is a fantastic person. I think Chris Christie is a fantastic person, been a friend of mine for 15 years. Just a fantastic person. And there's Mike, and Mike has done a great job as governor of Indiana. You look at the numbers, and it's been great -- he's done really a fantastic job."

Trump would have preferred to wait to make the announcement at the Republican National Convention, but today was the last day for Pence to drop out of his gubernatorial reelection race for next year.

Although Pence previously endorsed Ted Cruz, he has recently become a large supporter of Trump saying, " Whoever wins the Republican nation for president of the United States, I'm going to work my heart out to get elected this fall."

Pence began his political career in 1988 when he first ran for Indiana Representative, but he lost in '88 and '90 to Phil Sharp.

However, he continued in his political aspirations in 1991 when he was elected to the Indiana Board of Policy Review, and in 1993, he started his own political talk radio show.

Pence was first elected to congress in 2000 and later became an early supporter of the Tea Party.

As Governor of Indiana, Pence has been best known for signing a religious freedom act and for achieving several tax cuts.
