What is Slang and why is it important?
Slang is a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people. I find slang to be an important part of society, as it can relate people from other places in US and around the world.
Imagine if you didn't know any slang...
Chloe
I'm still weak from when that kid ran into a lamp post!
Cassie
"Weak"? What do you mean by that?
Chloe
What do you mean? Are you not hip?
Cassie
Hip as in the bone?
Chloe
Oh boy...
Does slang make you weak?!?
Maybe I should explain what "weak" means before using it in a sentence...
Allow me to explain "weak".
"Weak" in slang is still used as an adjective. However, in slang it doesn't mean you are actually weak. If used in slang, "weak" is used when someone has seen something hilarious and laughs uncontrollably.
Here's an example.
Johnny
Did you watch the comedy show last night?
Jimmy
Oh yeah! All those jokes had me weak!
Here are some minions being weak!
hehe... bottom.
Now you should be hip to being weak!
Good point minion, I should probably explain what "hip" means...
Get hip with "hip".
Before we begin, I'm not talking about your side bone. The term "hip" in slang is used as an adjective, not a noun. "Hip" in slang refers to someone being able to relate to something or someone.
Let's look at another example.
Jennifer
I'm so mad at our professor for giving us a pop quiz today!
Jessica
I'm hip! I haven't studied anything yet!
Now you know...
Knowledge is key...
Speaking of keys...
Have you ever heard someone say something to be "low-key" or "high-key"? Spoiler: They aren't talking about actual keys. These two can be used in a variety of ways. For the most part "low-key" stands for something that isn't well-known or isn't supposed to be well known. It can also mean you are reserved about sharing something. "High-key" is the opposite, meaning something is very well known or exciting.
Another example.
Conner
I low key don't know if I want to ask Molly to the dance... I'm worried she'll say no.
Craig
Do it man! There is no way she will say no!
It makes so much more sense now right?
Don't lie, your mind has been blown.
