Labour wins Mayoral election by just two votes
An amazing result for Labour candidate Andy Abrahams who won the Mansfield Mayoral election by just two votes.
After two recounts of second preference votes he got 7930 votes and Kate Allsop got 7928 votes.
Describing himself as a family man who wants 'A fresh start for Mansfield'.
He won 6,881 votes to Kate Allsop's 5,810 in the first votes so it went to second preference votes after the other three candidates were eliminated.
Hours passed in the Mansfield Civic Centre as first one recount then a second was made of the second preference votes.
In the end he won by almost the slimmest margin possible.
Until six months ago I wasn't really involved in politics.
After his victory in the mayoral elections Andy Abrahams said: "I want to thank the electorate I'm going to make sure I will not let them down. I will be a straight talking mayor, I'm going to stick to my manifesto and my pledges and work really hard for Mansfield.
He added: "I'm still taking it all in it's unrealistic to think that I expected this.
because up until less than six months ago I wasn't really involved in Politics.
"I've been a member of the Labour Party for 20 months- I've been a Labour voter all my life. I've got four children and the youngest twins are now 24 . I looked at Mansfield at the situation with it being a conservative town. I've seen how there's a lot of social deprivation It's my nature to get stuck in and before you know it and there's so much that can be done to improve Mansfield.
"I think people voted for me because they can relate to me. I was brought up on Ladybrook Estate , went to the local Junior school went to university and got an engineering degree. I changed careers into education. I think that shows I care about people and I've got compassion. I'm not really about chasing money. They could see me as a normal person and relate to the values I was talking about."
Second recount at Mansfield mayoral election
Yet another recount of the second preference votes..
This is going to be very close.
Candidates must be on tenterhooks.
Mansfield Mayoral election is very close - two recounts and counting
I'm live this morning at the Mansfield Mayoral Election, where the votes are being counted.
The provisional result of the first preference votes have just been announced.
Andy Abrahams, Labour Party with 6,881 votes and Kate Allsop, Mansfield Independent Forum with 5,860 votes go through to the second round.
Each council ward is under the First Past The Post voting system, while the Mayor is elected under the Second Ballot system, where the voter decides their first and second choice.
George Jabbour, The Conservative Party got 3,592 votes; Steve Garner, Independent got 4827 votes; Philip Shields, Independent got 2,422 votes.
If one candidate gets more than half of the first choice, he or she will become mayor.
If no candidate gets more than half the first choice votes, the two candidates with the most first choice votes will remain in the election and other candidates will be eliminated.
The second choice votes of the eliminated candidates are then counted and any that have been cast for the two remaining candidates are added to their total.
The candidate who has the highest overall total of votes is declared the Executive Mayor of Mansfield.
In the last election Kate Allsop succeeded Tony Egginton with 17,604 votes in the first prefrence and 22,600 in the second preference - a majority of 2,880 votes.
The turnout has been announced as 24,128 out of an electorate of 81,076 which is 29.7%
Mansfield District Council has been controlled by the Mansfield Independent Forum since May 2002.
Recount in Mayoral election
It must be close - a recount of the second preference vote is taking place.
Jacksdale results in
Jacksdale's parish councillors on Selston Parish Council are Christian Chapman, Paula Pilgrim,
Julie Gregory, Sammie Hankin, Sue Jackson and Margaret Ashmore.
Christian Chapman won in the district elections.
Selston and Underwood wards were uncontested.
Conservative pleased with his result
Conservative candidate George Jabbour said he was pleased with the result despite coming fourth. He said: "There was a lot of uncertainty in the national picture and with the national results overnight I feared I might come last in the Mayoral election today - but I'm delighted that in fact we doubled the share of the vote compared the last time we had stood a Conservative mayoral candidate.
"I have enjoyed this experience."
Tories lose control of Broxtowe
The Conservatives have lost overall control of Broxtowe Borough Council as Labour and the Liberal Democrats enjoyed gains in the borough elections.
There are still two seats to be contested in June - following the recent death of councillor Chris Rice in Stapleford South East - but the Broxtowe Tories will remain one shy of a majority even if they were to win both.
The council is now currently made up of 20 Conservative councillors (down from 27), 14 Labour (up from 11), five Liberal Democrats (up from four), one Ashfield Independent and two Independent councillors.
The new look means a coalition will need to be formed for any group to take control - and the Liberal Democrats have already set out their intentions.
'Coalition with the Tories unlikely'
Speaking after his party gained Bramcote from the Conservatives, Lib Dem leader Steve Carr said: "We are not going to make any decisions and we don't have to until after the election (set for June 13), but at the end of the day it is highly unlikely we will go into any agreement with the Conservatives."
The two big shocks of the night came in Chilwell West, where Labour took two seats from the Conservatives, and Bramcote, where the Liberal Democrats gained all three seats from the Tories.
Richard Jackson, leader of the Conservatives, retained his seat in Attenborough and Chilwell East, and while admitting he was disappointed in the result, he said that against a backdrop of general anger surrounding Brexit, it was still a vote of confidence in the authority's work over the last four years.
Labour disappointment at not taking majority
It is good that we have moved the direction of the council away from a Tory majority
Greg Marshall - Labour Parliamentary Candidate
Labour will fight for final two seats
Greg Marshalll, Labour's parliamentary candidate and councillor for Beeston West, said after the results had been finalised: "It is good that we have moved the direction of the council away from a Tory majority.
"I am slightly disappointed we didn't get enough seats in line with the fantastic campaign we fought, but clearly we made in roads in lots of seats around the borough."
He added that they will now be carrying on the party's campaign in Stapleford South East in the hope of gaining the two final seats.
