Choose the right game for you.

With all of the different types of games out there, there are so many decisions to be made. Do you like a more fast-paced multiplayer game you can enjoy with friends? Or is there one with a captivating story mode that you'd rather grind by yourself? The choice is all yours. Just ensure that you're enjoying it more than you're getting annoyed with it.

Do your homework.

There are always going to be better players, whether they are established professionals or emerging prodigies. Additionally, there will always be forums, tutorials and gameplay videos to display a certain tactic or style of play. So, study as many sources as you can. Just don't overload your brain.

Making new friends can be kind of awkward for some people, but you should just be yourself. Let's face it: you're not going to be a prodigy from the gates. With more time invested in gaming, there will be skills that are developed and experience gained for different circumstances. Get up an be active. Don't become a hermit in your basement who never sees the light of day. Join a gym or just go outside and do something physical. Exercise is proven to improve memory and concentration. Whether you're weightlifting or simply jogging, anything is better than nothing. Just don;t be like Homer.

With countless hours in front of a screen or monitor everyday, you're going to need to keep eating to support your gaming habits. Carrots are excellent for eyesight, blueberries are great for memory and caffeine helps with energy levels. Pizza and chips are not goof for anything except parties and tailgates. Be healthy!

Watch your spending habits.

Be frugal with your income, especially if you're considering going pro. Going out and spending your money senselessly on desires rather than necessities can be dangerous when it comes to gaming. Controllers can break, headsets can die, entire consoles can shut down. Be prepared for the worst and save up.

Don't get too angry.

You may not have anger management issues, but you will get angry when playing video games. It just happens, it's practically fate. If something doesn't go your way, just take a deep breath and close your eyes. Find a peaceful way to deal with your frustration that doesn't harm your or others around you. Or your monitor, yikes.

Take breaks.

Too much gaming can stress your body out, specifically your hands and eyes. So take frequent breaks to get up, stretch and get some fresh air. Pro tip: keep a water bottle filled at all times to induce drinking and bathroom trips. Refill it when on your way back to your gaming lair.

Relieve some stress.

With the euphoric highs of winning or going on a good streak and the abysmal lows of losing or doing consistently bad, it may seem like you're a manic depressive. You're not, as this is a common feeling for gamers. Find some way to relieve some stress from your hectic life. Go for a run, light some incense, chain smoke. OK, maybe don;t chain smoke, but your get the picture.

Cut out unnecessary stressors in your life.

With more and more time invested in gaming, you're going to have less time for other things in your life. Weed out the less important things in your life and eliminate them from your schedule. This may not be easy for everyone, as sacrificing is a two-way street. Whether it be cutting out uninfluential people or letting go of another hobby, do what you think is right.

Enter tournaments and take them seriously.

When you're at a point where you're confident with your capabilities, take it to the next level and enter into tournaments. There are smaller local ones and then larger-scale global competitions for grand prizes. You can make a lot of money from gaming professionally, so consider your skill set and put in the work to get better and ultimately win on the big stage.
