Diabetes treatment

Our bodies are systematic.

There is a sophisticated process in every function.
Our metabolism is a necessary process for our bodies – in order to live.
In the case of Diabetes, our normal process of converting sugar from food into energy is disrupted.
Essential to this conversion is Insulin.
When insulin is no longer produced by a person or it is produced in inadequate amounts, this exchange doesn’t take place.

Instead the sugar stays in the blood causing High Blood Glucose.
Diabetes treatment has one major goal across that board, and that is in the aim to keep blood glucose levels within a healthy target range.
The key is balance.
Balancing ones intake of food, with exercise and careful monitoring of prescribed medication.

4.Symptoms of Diabetes

1.Causes of Type 1 Diabetes

When the body’s own immune system has attacked and destroyed the cells where insulin is made., this is type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes has genetic risk factors as well as environmental factors concerning its cause. A theory debated is whether type 1 diabetes may occur after having a specific virus. To live with type 1 diabetes, the patient must take insulin every day. As there is no known cure., management of the disease is made possible by keeping blood glucose (sugar) levels within normal rang

2.Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

4.What happens win type 1 & 2?

TYPE 1 DIABETES – 10-15% CASES

In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas stops making insulin. Without any insulin whatsoever the body must find a way to survive. It begins to burn the body’s own fats instead. When this occurs there is an accumulation of dangerous substances in the blood called Ketoacidosis. Type 1 diabetes means taking insulin injections daily to survive.

TYPE 2 DIABETES – 85-90%

Type 2 diabetes is most common and is diagnosed in old age. Due to the pancreas not making enough insulin= high blood glucose. Type 2 is often found in individuals carrying excessive weight. They typically eat foods lacking in nutrients and have no physical activity or minimal. Genetic predisposition to diabetes is also another factor that a positive diagnosis may indicate.
Other types of diabetes include Prediabetes, Gestational Diabetes and Secondary.

8.Other treatments

Blood Glucose MonitoringTo prevent the development of complications from diabetes, it is imperative that one maintain good blood glucose control. Checking your glucose levels regularly and as often as needed means it may be wise to get in the habit of doing self-blood glucose monitoring, so long as this has been approved by your doctor.
To self test blood glucose levels you will need the following:
A blood glucose meter
A lancet device with lancets
Test strips.
Usually when you are looking to purchase a blood glucose meter for diabetes treatment, you will find it sold as a kit with all the tools necessary to start up on your own. Most of these kits are available to purchase from Diabetes Australia but your doctor will often help you choose the best suited meter for your needs.
Alternative Therapies for Diabetes Treatment
Natural Supplements
Some diabetics have found Magnesium to be helpful in the improvement of blood sugar control. It has been studied that having a lack of magnesium has an association with insulin secretion abnormalities. This is turn is associated with diabetes complications.
Plant foods

  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Buckwheat
  • Broccoli
  • Peas
  • Sage

Rich in fiber, most plant foods will be found beneficial for helping diabetics control their blood sugar levels.

9.Medical Cannabis Treatment for Diabetes

Many cannabinoids act just to inhibit prostaglandins and COX-2. Additionally they provide powerful anti-oxidant properties to salvage free radicals, and inhibit macrophage and TNF.

Cannabis is an excellent anti-inflammatory that lacks the side effects of steroids (which diabetics have to avoid), the NSAIDS, and the COX-2 inhibitors like Vioxx. This anti-inflammatory action may help quell some of the arterial inflammation common in diabetes.

Cannabis is also neuroprotective.

It is believed that much of neuropathy comes from the inflammation of nerves caused by glycoproteins in the blood that deposit in peripheral tissues and trigger an immune response. Cannabis helps protect the nerve covering (myelin sheath) from inflammatory attack. Cannabis also lessens the pain of neuropathy by activating receptors in the body and brain. Some components of cannabis (perhaps cannibidiol) act as anti-spasmodic agents similar to the far more toxic anti-convulsants like Neurontin. This action of cannabis helps relieve diabetic muscle cramps and GI upset.

Two other major actions of cannabis can benefit the diabetic.

The first is helping to keep blood vessels open and improving circulation.

Cannabis is a vasodilator and works well to improve blood flow.

The second action is how cannabis can reduce blood pressure over time.

While cannabis is not generally thought to be an anti-hypertensive and is no replacement for ACE inhibitors, it does contribute to lower blood pressure which is vital in diabetes management.

Night time can be particularly difficult for diabetics. A syndrome known as “restless leg syndrome” (RLS) is common.

Cannabis helps still RLS which is otherwise treated with quinine and/or muscle relaxants like Flexaril.

10.Ask the Experts

Dr. Patel,
I’ve had Diabetes for a while now. I’m experiencing some really horrid pain in my legs and feet because of it. My doctor tells me it’s because over the years the Diabetes has caused some nerve damage in my legs and feet.
The pain just creeped up on me out of nowhere. Initially, I was having pain here and there and didn’t make much of it, but now, it’s turned into a nuisance that won’t leave me alone, night or day. It’s relentless.
During the day, much of what I feel is numbness, but there are several times in the day when the numbness turns into a feeling of pins and needles stabbing my legs and feet. Then, there are other times when I feel like my legs and feet are on fire.
The pain won’t let me sleep either. I wake up in the middle of the night with this feeling of electrical shocks shooting down my legs. It’s painful to even have socks on.
It took a lot of trial and error to find a medication that helped. I have to tell you though the that process drove me nuts. After trying, Oxycodone, Tramadol, Nortriptyline, and Lyrica, we finally settled on Gabapentin.
The Gabapentin takes the edge off. Every once in awhile, it allows me to have a good day. On these days, I can remember what my life was like when I didn’t have the pain. Although I have to say that most days are bad days.
I’m still searching for a solution which can help me turn most of my bad days into good days. I’ve been putting my life on hold because this pain. It gets in the way of doing the activities that make me happy. I just want to spend my weekends playing golf again.
Have you found that medical marijuana helps patients with neuropathy?
Warm regards,
Robert

11.Is Cannabis The Diabetes Cure We Have Been Searching For?

If you love eating space cakes and cannabis-infused candies but worry about diabetes, we’ve got good news.

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases that are characterized by high blood sugar (also referred to as high glucose levels) either because the body can’t metabolize blood sugar properly or because insulin production isn’t enough. It can be caused by genetics, weight gain, inactivity, exposure to a virus, dietary factors, high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat that is stored in the blood), low high-density lipoprotein (HDL, also known as good cholesterol), or high blood pressure.

Diabetes affects around 29 million Americans, and almost 400 million people worldwide.

Diabetes leads to the death of 5 million people each year, despite the prevalence of big pharma in “treating” diabetes.

But then the great ganja shows us again, that yes there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and it isn’t exactly “news”. It all started back in 2005 when a research paper from the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis stated that cannabis had several health benefits for people who suffer from diabetes particularly because of its ability to stabilize blood sugar.

Marijuana’s anti-inflammatory properties have also proven effective in reducing the arterial inflammation that typically occurs with diabetes.

In fact, marijuana isn’t just a good remedy for diabetes: smoking pot is also a preventive measure. In 2013, the American Journal of Medicine published the results of a 5 year study on the effects of marijuana on glucose, insulin resistance and fasting insulin. 4,657 respondents participated in the study; out of these, 2,103 never touched cannabis while 2,554 have experience with it. The results showed that the fasting insulin levels were 16% lower than those who never smoked pot before. Current marijuana users also had higher HDL levels and lower levels of insulin resistance. On the other hand, the participants who were not current marijuana users but had used it at some point in their lives showed similar results although the differences were not that significant. This tells us that the marijuana’s protective benefits decrease with time.

According to an interview with Time Magazine, Murray Mittleman, lead researcher of the study and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School states: “The most important finding is that current users of marijuana appeared to have better carbohydrate metabolism than non-users. Their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level.”

In other words, light up: regular consumption of marijuana can prevent diabetes.

But that’s not all - studies show that the herb really is powerful in combating this dreaded disease.

Another study in 2014 published in the Natural Medicine Journal concluded that participants who used marijuana either in the past or until the time of the study revealed low levels of fasting insulin, glucose, decreased insulin resistance, lower BMI and waist size. Then in 2015, researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem released the findings of a study that CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are an effective treatment for various diseases including diabetes.

Glaucoma is a side effect of diabetes - people with diabetes are 40% more likely to develop retinopathy, which is a name used to describe glaucoma-related complications. In glaucoma, pressure increases behind the eye which can cut off blood flow resulting in a damaged optic nerve. Because pressure continues to build up, and the nerve damage worsens, glaucoma can lead to blindness.

Medical cannabis has long been prescribed already for those with glaucoma. Pot has been scientifically and medically proven to treat the inflammation that occurs as a result of more blood flow and nerve damage. However the relief provided by medical marijuana is temporary and this is why doctors recommend that patients need to smoke every 3 hours around the clock. Yes that means you can get stoned all day. But let’s not deny the fact that being stoned the entire day isn’t exactly healthy or productive, that’s why some doctors are already hesitant to recommend it. This is where the importance of choosing the right strains or perhaps opting for other methods of taking marijuana comes in. But the supervision of a doctor in using medical marijuana to ease the pain associated with glaucoma is still important, because it’s a progressive disease and to date there is still no cure.

I am an occasional token only because of pain contracts and regular pee tests. Having no idea I was diabetic (always felt like crap due to chronic ic pain) I ended up in the ER. They ran a battery of tests and just happened to run a glucose level 375. Next my family doc called and said in my office now. That started my journey with Type 2 diabetes. A1C 13.9 one year later A1C 6.1, LDL,HDL, CHOLESTEROL, TRIGLYCERIDES all within normal range. Year 2 A1C 6.0 perfect all others crap normal range and down 60 pounds. Still have to tale 50 units of Lantus at bedtime, Metformin sucks. Side effects diarrhea.......contantly. Hoping someday to get off this shit. This article gives me hope. Now if WI would jump on the bandwagon and at least approve medical usage I would be a shoe in. Thanks for the info.
