These Firefighters Saved The Life Of A Firehouse Retiree Who Drinks Coffee With Them Every Day

Former Lieutenant Robert Zolna retired from service in the Chicago Fire Department in 1998, but he was never fully able to give up the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters. So, every day except Sunday, he goes to the Mount Greenwood Fire Station to drink coffee with the current firefighters there. But everything changed the day he missed coffee for a doctor's appointment.

After the doctor's appointment, Zolna went down to his basement to take a nap and missed lunch, resulting in dangerously low blood pressure. When his wife, Luce, came home that afternoon, she found him going into shock and on the brink of cardiac arrest. She immediately called the paramedics and firefighters he so frequently drank coffee with, and within a matter of minutes they were there to save their friend. In spite of the fact that he went into cardiac arrest, they were able to get his heart going again and get him to a hospital where he went back into cardiac arrest. Doctors warned them that he had a slim chance of surviving, but Zolna pulled through and is now able to visit his friends at the fire station again. Speaking to the firefighters who saved his life, Zolna said:

Now, Bob even jokes that they have to keep giving him sugary sweets to keep his blood sugar from ever falling that low again.
