Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, has been an outspoken member of the Republican party for several years and even served as representative from the state of Georgia. Recently, she spoke out against Elizabeth Warren, whom the Senate voted to silence after she began reading a letter by Coretta Scott King written in 1980 to oppose Jeff Sessions' nomination as a federal judge. Alveda King commented on this situation, speaking of how she believed Coretta would have felt about Sessions today:

I believe certainly that if she could look at the record of Sen. Sessions today, with integrity, she would say, ‘Well, he has worked to prosecute the Ku Klux Klan; he has worked to desegregate public schools.'

King went on to explain what she believed Warren was trying to do by reading the letter...

It’s almost like a bait and switch, stir up their emotions, use the name King — and my name is Alveda King — stir up people’s emotions [and] play the race card, which she was attempting to do.
