Scientists at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee have created a very special robot called a RASL, or Russell, to help better understand children with autism and help to alleviate some of the social issues children with autism often face.

A child may not respond to their mother calling their name but may automatically respond to a robot action or a piece of technology. If we can use that technology to shift how that child responds then we may have a very valuable system to that child.

The Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders at Vanderbilt is focused on exploring how robotic interaction could help children with autism. They particularly hope robots could help them learn to find indicators of autism in children younger than the current common age for diagnosis, 2.

Use of intelligence systems and use of intelligent data analysis is allowing us to think about a critical time in development where we had a hard time approaching in previous studies.

Other experts, however, remain skeptical of using robots to interact with autistic children.

If you think about it, it’s not real life. We don’t interact with robots on a regular basis. We interact with people and deal with the unpredictability of the people.

But now, what we would like to know is...

Do you think robots are an effective way to study children with autism?
