Known as Victoria to the Romans, Nike rides a chariot and carries a golden laurel wreath to present to winners. She is often portrayed with wings (as in this statue at Schwerin Palace in Schwerin, Germany)—but not in Athens. Legend says she was never painted or sculpted with wings there, so she couldn’t fly away from the city.

Young and athletic, Apollo is the god of music, arts, the sun, and healing. He is often shown with the lyre (an instrument Hermes created just for him), a bow and arrow, and a laurel wreath (as in this 18th-century painting by French artist Charles Meynier), along with deer, swans, and pythons. Apollo is also the choir director for the nine Muses of the arts, literature, and science. Just don’t insult his musical ability—he gave King Midas donkey ears for doing that.

Dionysus (known as Bacchus to the Romans) is the original good time guy. The god of wine, fertility, parties, chaos, and madness, he is always in the center of the action, as in this 1597 fresco by Annibale Carracci in Rome. Dionysus’s symbol is the thyrsus, a wand topped with a pinecone, and his animals are serpents, tigers, dolphins, and donkeys. Though usually happy in his cups, he can lose his temper if he doesn’t get his way—just ask the sailors he tossed overboard. Luckily, they turned into dolphins and swam away.

Handsome and athletic, Hermes (Mercury to the Romans) is the messenger of the gods and the god of commerce, travel, and cunning. For all his speediness, though, his animal is a tortoise. Hermes is usually all business, though he can be a trickster at times—note the time he snuck out of his crib and stole his brother’s cattle.
