Tommy Tattz: Hip Hop Artist Founder of Fatlyfe

Tommy Tattz is one of the DMV area’s most successful entrepreneurs and music artists to hit the scene in recent years. The Founder of the Fatlyfe brand, Tommy has worked with some of the country’s most established musicians and producers in the industry to date. We sat down with Tommy to learn more about his most recent single, “Murdera,” his Fatlyfe brand and upcoming shop as well as his plans for expanding his budding empire.
Although Tommy Tattz has already established his own Indie label that he works with friend, business partner and music artist, Buc Noi under, Tommy is focused on the opening of his new Fatlyfe shop in the DMV as well as his upcoming music video release for his hit single, Murdera. We asked him to share a hint about his highly anticipated new video, and without giving away too much information, Tommy states, “It’s dropping soon, and it has a bit of a Kill Bill vibe to it, in which you will see the female character of a hitwoman as opposed to the stereotypical hitman.”
Tommy is also responsible for launching the successful series of Asian All-Star weekends. Since launching the first event in 2016, Tommy Tattz has hosted these events showcasing some of the most incredible Asian-American musical talent in the country in cities such as Fort Worth, Texas, Seattle, Washington and two annual events in the Metro DC area commonly referred to as the DMV.
Tommy Tattz has no distinct creative process when developing his music. Although he is normally in the studio for late night sessions around 2 and 3 am, he listens to the instrumentals sent to him first. “I don’t write my beats, I am more focused on the songwriting and co-engineering, usually working with local producers in my hometown that I know and trust. Once I hear the instrumentals, I start writing about whatever is happening in my life at the moment and the influences of my environment. I take the pen to paper and create the lyrics so that they can come to life cinematically for my fans,” he explains.
He often pays homage to his Cambodian heritage in his music, whether it is incorporating native words into the lyrics or in his videos by proudly repping Cambodia with his Cambodian Pride neck tattoo. As a public figure in his community, it is important for Tommy to incorporate his heritage into all aspects of his brand whether it is through Fatlyfe, his music, or his daily life.
Although being an independent artist is especially difficult this day in the digital age of streaming, Tommy said that he thoroughly enjoys having more freedom at the moment. “The advantages to having a major record label behind you of course are the radio connections and marketing push that the labels provide, but at the moment, I have more freedom, I create and release my music on my time with my decisions and I have full creative control which is most important to me.”
As his fans are anxiously awaiting the “Murdera” music video to drop and the launch of his new Fatlyfe store in the DMV, they can keep up with him online on his social media and streaming channels listed below. In the meantime, we all agree that we can’t wait for his music to reach the Billboard charts and for Fatlyfe to become an established, international brand!
