Light Up the Night
As a special nighttime salute to Maynard’s arts, cultural, and creative communities, Mill and Main will light up during ArtWeek, April 27 to May 6, in multicolored splendor. “Light Up the Night” is a colorful skyline celebration representing the wide spectrum of diverse artists and creative organizations. Light Up the Night celebrates the innovators and champions of creativity within the community.
Free Flow: A Multi-Media Experiment
Free Flow takes place April 27, 8 to 10 p.m. at Metrowest Kung Fu, 69 Main St. in Maynard. Admission is $8. An improvisational performance with dancers, musicians, a poet, a painter, a tapestry maker and a photographer takes place from 8 to 9 p.m. At 9 p.m., the audience will be invited to join in with the cast.
Celebration and Artist Talk
On April 28, from noon to 4 p.m., visit the gallery and studios at ArtSpace, 63 Summer St. in Maynard, where Acme Theater and printmakers will lead tours. Berit Strong, classical gambist will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. and Kay Hartung will give an artist’s talk from 3 to 4 p.m. Visitors will also be able to tour some of the artists’ studios, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is Free.
Kids Ceramics
Children in grades 4 to 7 will design and construct a clay project using slabs, carving tools, stamps and glazes in this ceramics workshop, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., April 30, at Silk & Clay Studio, ArtSpace, 63 Summer St. in Maynard. No experience necessary. Projects must be kiln fired, so finished projects must be picked up at a later date. Limited to eight students. Workshop is $20; pre-register at silkandclay.com/
Maynard as a Canvas Jury Show
‘Maynard as a Canvas’ seeks to bring in unique murals to decorate downtown Maynard. During this evening celebration from 6 to 9 p.m., April 30, at Celia T's Music Hall, 40 Summer St. in Maynard, the six finalists chosen will present their mural submissions, answer questions and discuss their craft. A winner will be announced at the end of the evening. Admission is free.
Asian Film Series: Culture in Film Discussions
Hosted by Fans of Film, this foreign language film series features contemporary films from Korea, Hong Kong and Japan, with a special post-film discussion on Asian contemporary film on opening night. Movies begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be shown April 30, May 1, and May 2, at Fine Arts Theatre Place, 19 Summer St. in Maynard. Admission is $7. Email fansoffilmatfinearts@gmail.com.
Kids Paint, Print, and Draw
Children in first- through second grade will experiment with acrylic paint, oil pastel, colored pencil, and printers inks, to create layers of color and texture and a finished piece of abstract art. This art workshop will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m., May 1, at Silk & Clay Studio, ArtSpace, 63 Summer St. in Maynard. Admission is $20; register at silkandclay.com/. This silk painting workshop for kids will be held 4 to 5:30 p.m., May 2, at Silk & Clay Studio, ArtSpace, 63 Summer St., Maynard. Admission: $20; register at silkandclay.com/
Recommended for grades 2 to 5, in this workshop kids will dye and over-dye white scarves, and add special effects. Limited to seven students.
Maynard Community Stories
Listen to stories about the Maynard community, 3 to 4 p.m., May 5, at Maynard Public Library, 77 Nason St. in Maynard. Enjoy an hour of a fast-paced slide show and story telling. There are eight stories of love and relationships, art and business, history and youth sports. Admission is free.
Kid Pinky
Get the blues with Kid Pinky, a retro-style, four-piece blues band that is both authentic and unique, 7 to 9 p.m., May 5, at Metrowest Kung Fu, 69 Main St. in Maynard. Band leader, Steve Prisby, will offer a brief history of the blues styles and musical inspirations behind the songs. He will also offer a question and answer with the other band members at the conclusion of the show. Admission is free.
