What it was like to be a teen in the 1950's

Rock n' Roll in the 1950's was the music teens enjoyed listening to. They created swing dancing, which was a fun and upbeat dance, which also involved inappropriate movement. This music and dance had a lot of movement involved and teens could feel free while dancing.

Teens liked going on dates, they went to ice cream parlors, pizza parlors, drive-ins, bowling alleys, coffee houses for their dates. School dances became a larger part of dancing. During school dances most of the time girls stayed with the date that brought them. By this time, kissing, hugging and other mild physical forms of affection were done quite frequently in public.

Teen's in the 1950's worked at restaurants, movie theaters, as well as ice cream parlors. Most of the time they would be working outside if they weren't home working. Their jobs were near by their houses.

Teens in the 1950's had similar interests as teens now. Teens in the 1950's liked to use their phones as well as watch t.v at home. They liked to go out with their friends to restaurants and just hangout. They would plan trips also.

Girls in the 1950's only wore dresses and skirts. "Teen girls in the 1950s often wore petticoats under gathered skirts with cardigan sweaters. It was common to wear cardigans backwards so the buttons were not visible from the front. They wore bobby socks and saddle shoes or, for the more grownup teens, stockings and modest low heels."

"The first thing you notice viewing pictures of teens in the 1950's is the neatness of their dress. Whether wearing their long-sleeved button-up shirts with or without sweater vests, teenage boys knew that pressed and tucked were the order of the day."

Most of the time when teen girls were home with their mother, they'd learn how to clean, cook and take care of the house.
