At 20 years old, Marilyn Monroe, or Norma-Jean Dougherty, had never really been in front of a camera before.

But you wouldn't know it.

Then boyfriend and photographer André de Dienes took Norma-Jean to a beach in Malibu and snapped these shots of the soon-to-be superstar.

“She was twenty and had never experienced the intoxication of success, yet already there was a shadow over her radiance, in her laughter." Said de Dienes.

Marilyn had yet to have any real modeling experience, but de Dienes prompted her with different emotional cues. As you can see, Norma-Jean had a talent she hadn't quite grasped yet.

She also wore no make-up whatsoever.

By now pictures of Marilyn are synonymous with sex, with flirtation, with tragedy. But these pictures remind us that Marilyn Monroe was once just a shy girl on a beach, enjoying the sunshine and mugging for the camera.
