Several states we have today weren't even a thing until well after the Civil War! This is fascinating!

This incredible animation shows the evolution of America and it's United States:

2

It's a ton of information all at once, so we've broken it down for you.

The first bit shows America in it's infancy, 20+ years on from it's founding. It's fascinating how much of New England's borders have stayed the same as everything changes around them:

3

Then the landscape begins to change rapidly as countries such as Spain, France, and the UK continue to fight over land:

4

The wars continue, with Mexico vying for much of the Southwest.

5

As the Civil War breaks out, green is introduced to the Gif to represent the Confederacy. The West was still mostly undefined 'territories' at this point.

6

The U.S. slowly approaches our modern borders as Alaska finally becomes part of the U.S. Notice it was Russia up until this point.

Alaska still isn't a state at this point, just a district.

7

Then we see the good ol' U.S. of A take it's current shape - with the last 'territory' officially becoming a state - Hawaii - in 1959 along with Alaska.

8

Amazing isn't it? Check out the GIF again now that you've seen it broken down:
