Women's Education
Educational opportunities were limited. Many teachers and parents had narrow expectations for girls whose destiny was to be married, have a home and a family, with work just an interim measure between leaving school and walking down the aisle, rather than a career. Expected Marriage For Women
In the 1950's the average age for men and women to be getting married is around their late teens and early adulthood. Experts also believed that wives were responsible for their husbands’ professional success. Even when alcohol, affairs or abuse was the issue in a failing marriage, wives were still responsible for making the marriage work — and for likely causing their husbands to stray, drink or be violent in the first place.
