After 8 ducklings became trapped in the bottom of a storm drain, it took a joint effort across Washington D.C.'s Fire, EMS, Police, Animal Control, and Water and Sewer Authority Departments to save them and return them safely to their mother, but that's exactly what happened. First, they tried removing the grate:

When that didn't work, they ended up rescuing the ducklings one by one by lowering a net into the drain and pulling them back up before placing them in a carrier.

They were ultimately able to pull all eight ducklings out of the storm drain and return them to their mother, which you can watch here:
