Okay first up, tell us how you decided to start your YouTube channel!

Out of boredom!! I was abroad and working in Dubai and I wasn't doing anything with beauty, so I started an Instagram for fashion - because it's my passion. I did some outfit posts on YouTube and then I just rolled into beauty! Now I'm more known for beauty than fashion, but hey ho that's fine!

I've always had websites, but I started my blog and then I read loads of other blogs and everyone seemed to kinda be going to YouTube. It was a natural progression really as it's so much easier to talk about beauty products than write about them.

I never knew what I wanted to do. I was good at most things but not good enough for it to show me a path to follow.I even used to type "What is Carly's dream job" into Google and there was no answer. A friend suggested I looked at YouTube, although I lacked confident. After a few months it was my fitness videos that received the most attention and before long I was inundated with people asking me to train them!

How inspiring! So, what kind of challenges did you have to overcome as a beauty YouTuber?

Laura Porter

I definitely think skincare for me. A lot of my viewers will say "oh I'm having a breakout - what should I do" and if you're not trained in it then you don't wanna say "oh put this on your face" because if it doesn't... Sometimes I'd love to just go be trained in it so I know I can give proper advice.

My body has always been a challenge. I've suffered with Body Dysmorphia from a young age. Although I feel so lucky to receive so many amazing comments and emails now, somehow people always manage to comment on the part of you that you dislike. Comments can be hurtful, but I actually owe my confidence to YouTube - it forced me to realise who I am.

I think everyone deals with the same thing, but no one really talks about it. Hate is a huge thing - it took me back at first. I was like "why me?! I'm so nice!". I didn't understand why they were being so mean. I didn't do anything to anyone so why would I get hate, but it's something that everyone has to deal with, for sure.

Can you recommend to us any beauty YouTubers we need to keep our eyes on! We love finding new creators.

There are so many incredible YouTubers out there and I'm lucky to call so many friends. Of course I have to mention my favourites InTheFrow, HelloOctober and the Pixiwoo's for makeup.

There's a lot of Instagrammers doing YouTube now that are huge. I wish AmRezy would do YouTube but I don't think she would. I've also been following Ourfa Zinali on Instagram for ages. She has A LOT of followers and she only just started doing YouTube and I'm obsessed with her. She's the one.

I love BeautyCrush and Gracie Franchesca. She's really real I think, and I love her attitude - she's quite sassy! I really like Shonagh Scott, she's got loads of subscribers but she's really cool as well. If you watcher her, you feel really depressed about your own makeup skills.

For all our readers wanting to start their own channel, could you give them some tips on how to stand out from the crowd?

Nina Vee

Just be yourself - no one's gonna be you,so just be yourself. The more genuine you come across, the more likable you'll be because no one's like anyone else. Your personality for sure has to stand out. It's uncomfortable in the beginning, but you have to keep doing it to get comfortable with it.

I think it's really tough to think of different content now because everything has been done. But one thing that I try to do is film things in different ways.Try to think of different ways to film it, different angles, different close ups. And obviously thumbnails are really important!

Also, do you have any advice on things you 100% shouldn't do on YouTube?

Laura Porter

Laura Porter say

I think you can pretty much do anything on YouTube now. It's kinda like anything goes. 100 layers of makeup, felt tip pens, you can pretty much do it all. If anything, something a bit different that you probably shouldn't do would probably go down well!

Nina Vee

Nina Vee say

Don't do it for the wrong reasons. I think a lot of people are like "oh my god this person is doing this or has this opportunity or is getting free makeup or whatever it is, I'm gonna do it for that!". It has to be for your love of it otherwise it's not gonna last.

And lastly, what do you feel is the future of beauty vlogging?

Nina Vee

Nina Vee say

I've seen recently people doing huge compaigns for big brands and collaborations, and I think in the last two years people have been collaborating with bigger brands, not drug store brands. I think the same way models used to do covers of Vogue and now actresses and singers are doing it, I think that that's where blogging and YouTube is going towards. You actually love these products so I think it comes across more genuine.

Laura Porter

Laura Porter say

I think it will just kinda carry on expanding. I think the thing is with YouTube now is that there are so many professional people on there as well. It makes it quite difficult if you're not because you have to raise the bar a little bit.
