Star Trek: The Next Generation

Back in the 80s I first came across The Next Generation, and this was where I really took notice of Star Trek, I was old enough to realise what it was and how interesting the stories were. In fact I was staying with family in America and I had nothing to do when they were out working so I watched a lot of television, TNG was on everyday so i was able to watch, to me, a brand new show for the time I was there. I was sad when I returned to the UK as we didn't have anything like this for years.

Blakes 7

I remember watching Blakes 7 with my dad, this was quite a dark show really, not your usual daddy-5 year old daughter show, essentially Roj Blake is a former rebel leader who once led a resistance group against the evil intergalactic government the Federation, The Federation has drugged the air, water and food to control it's citizens. But Blake was captured and was brainwashed and his memories were erased. After learning the truth about himself from outlawed protesters. Blake is apprehended, when the protesters are slaughtered by Federation Guards. The Federation frames Blake for a series of crimes he didn't do and Blake is sentenced to exile on the Federation prison planet Cygnus Alpha. But as Blake and a group of convicts are being transported to Cygnus Alpha, a abandoned alien spaceship pulls up alongside the prison ship, allowing Blake to escape. Renaming the alien spaceship "The Liberator" and joined by escaped convicts. Blake and the crew of "The Liberator" travels across Outer Space as they set out to overthrow the Federation and liberate the Federation controlled worlds. Blakes 7 was the first space show I remember watching. And I think this is where I caught the sci-fi bug, the writing was very good ( now I am old enough to understand it) the sets not so much, but the acting more than made up for it.

The Prisoner

This was just a bit freaky and probably one of the strangest things to come out of UK sci-fi at the time, my main memory was big bouncy white balls and that i don't think it

4

Monkey

Is the story by Wu Ch'êng-ên based on the ancient Chinese legend tracing the origins of Buddhism. It follows the adventures of Tripitaka and disciples Pigsy, Sandy and of course Monkey, on their journey from China to India to fetch the large vehicle holy scriptures which will save the world. This show has many fond memories for my age group, mostly of Monkey riding on the cloud.

The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy

The 80s TV show ( not the film) Arthur Dent awakes one morning and finds his house is going to be demolished, but for Arthur, the demolition of his house is only the beginning, when his friend, eccentric Ford Prefect reveals to Arthur he is not a human and he is a alien from a planet called Beetleguise and is a researcher for a electronic book called "The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy." Ford saves Arthur when the Earth is destroyed by the Vogans so the Vogons can begin construction of a new hyperspace bypass. Joined by Ford's cousin, Zaphod Beeblebrox, a two-headed hippie-like former intergalactic President, Intelligent Human woman Trillian and Marvin, a depressed paranoid android, Arthur and Ford embark on a intergalactic adventure, which leads them to The Restraunt at the End of the Universe, discovering the creation of Earth and discovering the meaning of life. The show was different to the film and I do prefer this version.

6

Tripods

Sci-fi thriller about the takeover of earth by alien tripods. The conquerers start controlling human minds, but not until after they reach the age of sixteen. This was another 80s show but sadly it was cancelled before the third series was produced so you're left on a fairly dark cliffhanger.

7

Sapphire & Steel

Staring Joanna Lumley and David McCullum was a complex involved science-fiction series about a special force of interdimensional operatives whose task is to protect the universe from evil forces trying to gain a foothold by disrupting the timeline. The strange energy beings are assigned to cases, when and where needed, and materialise on Earth as humans, each with specialist abilities to ascertain and then solve the problems. The mysteries encountered by Sapphire, Steel and their colleagues include people trapped in photographs, ghosts lost in time, and a dinner party of guests who are all long-dead. Their most-dangerous challenge, innocuous-seeming at first, is a petrol station whose time-line is repeating endlessly - and which turns out to be a major hazard, set by unknown forces, to trap Sapphire and Steel in a closed time-loop forever...this was aired in the late 70s and early 80s and used the standard one season per story as Doctor Who did back in those days.
