Calliope or Thalia

Calliope or Thalia

Calliope is the Muse of Epic poetry. She was the muse for Homer’s Illiad and the Odyssey and the lover of Ares and bore him four sons, she also is the mother of Orpheus and Linus, she was wise and assertive, and during a singing match she turned the girls she defeated into magpies. She normally has a writing tablet or a book with her. Her color is purple.

Thalia is the muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. She is crowned with ivy and holds a comic mask and a trumpet. She is said to have one son with Apollo. She loves laughed and was considered very playful and creative. Her color is green.

Euterpe or Erato

Euterpe is the Muse of music and lyrical poetry. She was described and delightful and was often seen happy and joyful, the brightest of the muses. She invented the double flute and other wind instruments and is said to only have had one mate and one son. Her color is Turquoise

Erato was the muse of erotic poetry. She was considered the loveliest and most desired of all muses. She is charming and has no children or serious relationships. She is normally seen with a wreath of myrtle and roses, with turtle doves eating at her feet. Her color is Pink

Clio is the Muse of History and lyre playing. She had one son and many lovers. She was the proclaimer and often was seen with scrolls and parchment. She was considered beautiful and her name means to make famous or celebrate. She enjoyed story telling of the past best. Her color is Blue

Polyhymnia is the Muse of Hymns and Sacred Poetry and Pantomime. She was very serious, pensive and meditative. She was often seen with her finger against her mouth and dressed in a long cloak and veil. Her color is Gold

Melpomene or Terpsichore

Melpomene is the Muse of Singing and Tragedy she is normally represented with a tragic mask in one hand and a knife in the other. Sirens were born from the union between her and the river god Achelous. She was considered dramatic and melodious. Her color is yellow.

Terpsichore is the Muse of dance and chorus. Usually seen with a lyre she was called the Whirler of the Dance. Her associated color was red, she was fun loving, fond of people and friendly.

Urania

The muse of astronomy, the eldest of the muses she is said to be powerful, graceful and majestic, she is philosophical, normally seen with a celestial globe in her hand and a cloak that looks like stars. She tells the future by the arrangement of the stars. Her colors are gray and black. Charles Dickens created a fallen woman refuge shelter and named it Urania Cottage.
