Back to the Future was almost... Spaceman from Pluto

Did they make the right choice? Definitely. Back to the Future is a much grabbier, more intriguing title. And crucially it mentions the future, which – as we all know – is a pretty big deal in the film.

2

Final Destination was almost... Flight 180

Did they make the right choice? Flight 180 sounds more like a Ryanair boarding call than a thriller about cheating death. The current title's double meaning fits the bill far better.

3

The Breakfast Club was almost... The Lunch Bunch

Did they make the right choice? The Lunch Bunch rhyme sounds a lot less cool than The Breakfast Club. Yes, it makes more sense because the kids eat lunch in the film, but wouldn't you rather be in a club than a bunch?

4

Hancock was almost... Tonight, He Comes

Did they make the right choice? The original title sounds dangerously like an X-rated movie which you'd never go and watch with anyone, ever. Also, what's with the comma?

5

Texas Chainsaw Massacre was almost... Head Cheese

Did they make the right choice? Yes, yes, 100% yes. Head Cheese is possibly the most ludicrous title ever and couldn't sound less scary if it tried. It also makes the thought of a nice cheese board suddenly completely unappealing.

6

FIeld of Dreams was almost... Shoeless Joe

Did they make the right choice? Well, Shoeless Joe sounds more like a farce about a hapless old man than an inspiring tale of self belief...

7

Saturday Night Fever was almost... The Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night

Did they make the right choice? Well, that original title is quite a mouthful and sounds a lot less exciting without the word "fever". Plus it wouldn't make for a very catchy song...

8

Snakes on a Plane was almost... Pacific Air Flight 121

Did they make the right choice? There would be absolutely no point in that film existing if it wasn't called Snakes on a Plane. After all, that's the reason Samuel L Jackson agreed to do it in the first place. If you're putting snakes on a plane, you've got to put them in the title, too.

9

Alien was almost... Star Beast

Did they make the right choice? Star Beast sounds intriguing but also rather cute – not exactly the effect the filmmakers were going for.

10

Fatal Attraction was almost... Affairs of the Heart

Did they make the right choice? Affairs of the Heart could be mistaken for a cheesy rom-com rather than a thrilling look at stalking and obsession. Fatal Attraction is far punchier, too.

11

Predator was almost... Hunter

Did they make the right choice? They're practically the same title, but predator has the edge – it sounds that bit scarier and non-human, doesn't it?

12

Pretty Woman was almost... 3000

Did they make the right choice? Well, the theme song would have been very different indeed. The original title refers to the cost of a night with Julia Roberts' character but titles that need explaining aren't much fun. Also, lose one zero by accident and it sounds a little too like a certain fantasy war film...

13

Hitch was almost... The Last First Kiss

Did they make the right choice? The First Last Kiss sounds a lot like a rubbish, cheesy rom-com, whereas Hitch makes the film a little more enticing for those who shun schmalz.

14

Annie Hall was almost... Anhedonia

Did they make the right choice? Ahedonia (which means inability to feel pleasure in normally pleasurable activities) would have been a pretentious choice given that most of us have no idea what it means, let alone how to pronounce it.

15

Friday the 13th was almost... A Long Night at Camp Blood

Did they make the right choice? We rather like the original title – it's certainly scary – but it's also quite a mouthful. Imagine saying, "hey, shall we go and watch A Long Night at Camp Blood at the cinema?"

16

Blade Runner was almost... Android

Did they make the right choice? Well, if it had kept its original title Android would now sound like a type of smart phone instead of a robot. Blade Runner has certainly aged better and has a sense of speed and thrill that Android just... doesn't.

17

Mean Girls was almost... Homeschooled

Did they make the right choice? Homeschooled doesn't have the same bite to it, and also suggests that the film is all about Cady when actually it is far more about girls being mean. Like, really mean.

18

Batman Begins was almost... The Intimidation Game

Did they make the right choice? Well, isn't there now an Oscar-nominated film with a very similar name? It's a great title, but that could have got confusing...
