If It’s Too Hot For You, It’s Probably Too Hot For Them
If it’s uncomfortable to sit outside for an extended time, then it’s probably too hot for you pet to be outside as well. So even if it’s 80 degrees outside, it can still be very hot for your furry friend (especially with exercise and humidity worked in). Keep them inside for the day!
Hydration Is Even More Important
Keeping a fresh bowl of cool water available is crucial. Not only is it important for hydration’s sake, but on hot days your pet’s water will become warm, too, which is not fun. Imagine exercising outside in the sun and then drinking a water bottle full of hot water. No thanks!
Let Your Pet Find Their Cool Spot
It’s no mystery why our pets like to lay on tiled, hardwood, or concrete floors during summer heat; it’s the best place to stay cool! If you have a fan or air conditioning unit, you can make their spot in the house even better by directing some cool air their way.
Pay Attention To Unusual Fatigue
Is Fido not as spry on his or her walk? If your pup is panting harder and getting tired faster, chances are their internal temperature is getting hotter and they’ll need a shady, cool area to rest. If this is the case, turn around and head home to give them some water and cool off.
Driving? Leave Your Pet At Home
Even if it’s not extremely hot outside, leaving your pet in a car while you shop or run errands can have unfortunate heatstroke effects (even with the windows down!). It’s the trapping of solar heat in the car that makes the temperature rise so quickly. So when in doubt, leave them home!
Stay Away From The Close Shave
Although it might seem logical to shave your dog or cat to keep them cool, scientists now believe that your pet’s fur acts as a buffer to keep heat out in the summer and heat in during the winter. Giving a trim is okay, but getting rid of that buffer will not make them cooler!
