7 Things You Didn't Know About the Children of Working Mothers

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percent of stay-at-home mothers was only 29% in 2012. That makes 71% of mothers in the U.S. working mothers. Which results in a large number of children of working mothers.

It's a well known fact that it costs a great deal of money to raise a child; but how much is a great deal? CBS News shared this expensive fact: It costs nearly $14,000 a year to raise a child. For many families, a double income is necessary to cover that expense.

Children of working mothers may sometimes feel jealous of children who get to spend time with their stay-at-home mom; however, that doesn't mean that their mothers don't want to spend time with them. They make as much time as they can and still put their children first, regardless of their career.

Though the stigma of working mothers is that they don't spend enough time with their children, the facts say different. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that stay-at-home mothers only spend 7 more hours a week with their child than working mothers. That's only an extra hour a day that children of stay-at-home moms get with their mothers.

There is evidence mounting that there are "economic, educational and social benefits for children" of working mothers, courtesy of Claire Cain Miller. Miller, of the New York Times, shares information stating "daughters of working mothers completed more years of education, were more likely to be employed and in supervisory roles and earned higher incomes”.

As previously stated, daughters of working mothers are earning higher incomes, but how much higher? According to Miller, “daughters of working mothers earned 23 percent more than daughters of stay-at-home mothers”.

Though everyone is different and it doesn't apply to everyone, studies show that sons of working mothers become really great dads. Miller's research showed that sons who were raised by working mothers spend 7 1/2 more hours on childcare than sons of stay-at-home moms. They also spend 25 more minutes on housework than sons of stay-at-home mothers.
