The Test of Time

It seems that there is never enough time in the day? But since we all get the same dose of 24 hours, why is it that a few of us consistently achieve so much more than the rest? Are they just better at time management? More focused? More disciplined? Smarter?

At the end of the day, everything you do as a creative (depending on your role of course) is spent on 3 things:
1. Creative time
2. Client servicing time
3. Project management time

A healthy balance between the 3 is ideal. As someone in the creative

When getting feedback from your clients on creative work, how often do you usually need to go back to them for clarification?

How do you feel about tools that help you be more productive in managing your projects?

What would you say is the best way to communicate with your clients during projects?

What’s the first task on tomorrow’s to-do list?

The Creativator!

The Creativator!

You simply “own” your creative time! So much freedom, so much time to think, create, and innovate. You’ve got your own style and rituals to help you “get in the zone”, but be careful not to get too deep into the zone. Remember, you still have those people who depend on what you create called “clients”. They want to see your wonderful work. And, oh yeah, are things still on time?

Captain Tik Tok

You’re the master planner and you’re captain of the “plane” making sure that you get where you’re client is supposed to get to, on time, and on budget. You dream about Gantt charts, timelines and love delving into the mysterious art of resource allocation. That’s all good, but make sure you don’t navigate too far into PM land and lose sight of your creative time, and of course face time with your clients. They need some love too you know.

The Care Taker

You’re either obsessed with creating exceptional value for your clients beyond the creative tasks you’re delivering, or your clients are super needy and are eating up too much of your time. Either way, the other 2 components of “Creative time” and “Project Management” are being neglected which can have negative consequences in the long term. Of course, clients liking you and valuing you are great things, but don’t let it backfire by hurting your time to be creative.
