Seven Reasons Why "Harry Potter" Is My Valentine This Year

Yes, a book series about a boy wizard is my Valentine, and do you know what? I'm not even sad about it.

I haven't been in a relationship in seven years.

Me too, Snape. Me too. This is how I feel anytime I like someone. The old Forever Alone meme is me. Might as well get the sad truth out of the way now. Valentine's Day is about romance, so we have to start with the fact that I am a sad, 25-year-old cat lady. There's no shame in that game, but I will concede that I would like, just once, to have a freaking Valentine. The last time I had a Valentine on Valentine's Day, I was 12. I just saw the other day that he's engaged to be married now. This is fine.

I'm currently doing a reread.

This was the first time since I was 12 that I had ever gone a year without reading the books, so diving back into it is like running into an old flame and finding out there's still this romantic spark. You always thought about that person and never could get over them, and now they're in front of you. Bam! You've got butterflies. In five days – with a full-time job plus writing time – I have already finished the first two books. I haven't smiled so much since I don't know when.

"Harry Potter" was always my safe space.

This may come as a shock to you, but I was a weird kid. Being made fun of by the cool kids was a daily occurrence unless they wanted my help with classwork. I'm maybe a little more well adjusted nowadays, but my heart will never have enough room to hold the love I feel for the series that made me feel like I had a home to hide in on the bad days.

Hermione has always been everything to me.

There has never been a time when Hermione wasn't my favorite character. It came as a shock to me when I found out that there are people who don't like her at all. When I first got into the books, I wanted to be exactly like Hermione, and I embodied her know-it-all essence. To this day, I am a Gryffindor with Ravenclaw tendencies, and I see myself in Hermione. My love for Hermione alone could be enough to make the books my Valentine. If I don't stop, I'll gush. She's great, guys. Harry wouldn't have survived without her.

The books have had amazing staying power.

I have never reread a series as many times as I have the "Harry Potter" series. It's like when you see an elderly couple who are still in love; that's going to be me with these books. I have read every book so many times that I can recite entire sections. I can quote it and then find the quote in less than 30 seconds. I'll be reading these books 50 years from now when I'm an old woman. Hopefully, I'll also be married, but if not, at least I'll have cats and "Harry Potter". And the cats will still be named after characters in "Harry Potter".

I discovered my passion through "Harry Potter".

Yes, I spent my formative years reading and writing Dramione fan fiction by the bucketload. I wrote pages upon pages of fan fiction instead of paying attention in geometry my freshman year of high school. I failed the class, but I don't even regret it. It's not like I like math anyway. Now I'm writing for the site I always dreamed of working for, and I'm working hard on my own novel.

The "Potter" fandom is where I found my family.

Even if I don't have a romantic Valentine this February 14, I will have platonic Valentines. From my friend Kerstyn who has been with me since the beginning of my "Potter" journey, to Connor who became my friend because I was wearing a Gryffindor sweater to school (weird kid fact: it was the actual kind you wear to Hogwarts), to Ashley who became my roommate and goes on crazy "Potter" adventures with me, I know that our relationships would not be the same without these books, and I wouldn't have them any other way.

If that isn't a romance for the ages, I don't know what is.

Is "Harry Potter" your Valentine this year too? Let me know, and tell me why you love these books the way you do!
