Seashell Bikini

Seashell Bikini

Lady Gaga's seashell bikini is inspired by the famous painting "The Birth of Venus" by Botticelli. It celebrates sexual freedom, female beauty, and and art. Gaga wore the seashell bikini as a way of promoting her album ARTPOP, which was about the combination of high art and pop culture. The seashell bikini also made appearances in the ARTPOP tour during the performance of her song Venus, in her music video for her song Applause, the iTunes Festival, and many on screen performances.

The Living Dress

The Living Dress

The Living Dress is named so because the wings, headdress, and collar flutter and move at their own control, and other parts of the dress open and close. Lady Gaga wore The Living Dress during The Monster Ball 2.0 as she performed her song So Happy I Could Die. There is not much explanation for the dress, but it symbolizes how she becomes one with her creativity and gives her art life.

The Orbit

The Orbit

Lady Gaga's orbit is her signature piece from the Fame Monster era. It is featured in her music video for Bad Romance, in The Monster Ball promotional poster, and she wore another version of it while she sang Bad Romance in The Monster Ball 2.0. In addition, she wore a headpiece version of the orbit which went around her head in some interviews. The album it is associated with touches on some of Gaga's fears, Bad Romance being the fear of love and intimate relationships.

88 Pearls

88 Pearls

There are exactly 88 pearls in this Lady Gaga outfit. She and the designer carefully counted each one. They decided on the number 88 for multiple reasons. The sky can be divided into 88 quadrants with one constellation in each piece. There are 88 keys on a piano, which is Gaga's favorite instrument. The number representing infinity is 88. The 88 Pearl outfit represents immortality, infinity, and connectivity.

Italian Curls

Italian Curls

During the Cheek to Cheek era, Gaga abandoned her fantastical outfits and returned to her roots. Generally paired the hairstyle with flowy dresses or T shirts with shorts. She also began wearing huge, curled brown wigs to show her Italian heritage. She chose this natural look because she believes there are two sides to her: the Blonde and the Brunette. The Blonde is perceived to be very commercial and fake, because of the stereotype of rich blonde airheaded girls. Whenever Gaga feels the Blonde has been attacked by the media too much, and is now "dead", she becomes the Brunette to begin again. Then once the Blonde has had time to recover, she switches hair colors.

The Meat Dress

The Meat Dress

Probably her most famous dress, the Meat Dress is made entirely of raw beef. She wore it to promote civil rights; if we cannot exist as equals with the same rights as everyone else, we may as well be worth the meat on our bones. Lady Gaga wore another version of the Meat Dress on her Born This Way tour while she sang Americano, as well as another version of the dress for the cover of Vogue Magazine.

Volantis Dress

Volantis Dress

The Volantis Dress is a literal flying dress. Lady Gaga and the Haus of Gaga built the dress based on the Studio XO design. It can hover and fly in different directions. Lady Gaga used the dress to symbolize her life taking off and starting somewhere new. It was worn in a promotional concert for her album ARTPOP.

Dressed in Drag

Dressed in Drag

Lady Gaga created the alter ego Jo Calderone during the Born This Way era. The character is featured in the music video for her song You and I. In the video, Jo sits on top of a piano that Gaga is playing, and in the end, she kisses her male self. In a live performance of You and I, Jo is represented as Gaga's ex boyfriend. He delivers a monologue in which he states that she was too crazy and he did not know how to handle her weirdness. Once the monologue is over, he sings You and I to show he still loves her. Jo Calderone is supposed to represent self love and respect, no matter how difficult it may seem.
