Police encounter some pretty strange things on the job and never know what each new day is going to bring. In January of 2019, police in Oklahoma City learned of a truly grisly discovery that they simply weren't prepared for.

(Be prepared, it's about to get creepy.)

The family of an elderly man had been trying to contact their family member for months, but could never seem to get him on the telephone. Whenever they would call the home where the man lived, his son would make up some sort of excuse why his father wasn't able to come to the phone.

Sometimes the son would say that the man was not feeling well. Other times he would tell them that the man was napping and didn't want to be bothered. The son would make up every excuse in the book not to let the inquisitive relatives speak to his father. Naturally, the relatives couldn't help but grow both worried and angry that they kept getting the brush off. It was time to take matters into their own hands!

The worried relatives were becoming less patient by the day and began to realize something wasn't right. Why was this man refusing to let anybody speak to his father? He must have been trying to hide something.

Eventually, the man's relatives decided to pay a visit to the home where the son lived with his father and confront him about all the excuses. They made the drive and knocked on the door when they knew that somebody would be home to open it.

Lots of families can be dysfunctional, but it's safe to say that nobody was prepared for what they saw next.

The relatives made a shocking discovery that chilled them to the bone. Waves of anger, confusion, and sadness washed over them. The son had been telling them lie after lie this entire time and now the truth had bubbled to the surface.

The angry family members immediately called the local police who came to the house to investigate what was going on. "We see all kinds of things, and this is one of the most disturbing things that we can see," Deputy Chief Russ Landon told a local news station.

It was like something out of a horror movie!

As police entered the home, they were most certainly hit with a horrid and foul stench. The sort of smell that every homicide detective knows all too well. It was the smell of DEATH!

Officers covered the mouths and gasped at the horror that laid before them. It was the decomposing CORPSE of the man's father. The man was dead in his beadroom in "an advanced state of decomposition," according to news reports.

The man hadn't died that day...that week... or even that month. He had been dead and left to rot in the home for several months!

One deputy had a truly gruesome description of the man's corpse. This is what he told the local news...

Once a person dies, their body immediately begins to decompose and as the days and weeks go by, the human body tissue breaks down.

One officer on the scene said the father's body was so badly decomposed that "he was covered with bugs and appeared to no longer have eyes!"

How could a person allow their parent to die and just allow the body to sit there for months on end? "For no one to be told about it for a couple months is pretty strange," Deputy Landon said.

News reporters wanted answers and visited the son at his father's home to find out more.

Reporter Bret Buganski knocked on the son's door to get some answers his father's mysterious death.

Brett: "We wanted to ask you some questions about your father who just recently passed away."

The man didn't want to talk and said "No, I'm under advice of an attorney not to discuss this."

Even though the man wouldn't talk, Bret wasn't about to give up. He had one more question for the man.

"How long did you know that your father was dead?" asked Bret.

Still, the man refused to discuss his father's death and why he was living with his father's dead body. He closed the door and hid inside his house.

According to the police, the man later changed his story and said that he didn't know his father had died.

Huh?! What?! Would such a flimsy excuse hold up or would the man be charged with a crime?

Desecration of a corpse is a felony, but it so far the man hasn't been charged with a crime. That doesn't mean he's completely off the hook though.

Police don't simply give you a free pass when you keep a dead body in your home for weeks and then say you didn't know the person was dead.

The police have launched an investigation into the case and it's possible that the man might be charged with the felony of failing to report his father's death and even another crime -- forging checks!
