The first episode of the new series of Doctor Who with Jodie Whittaker in the leading role was watched by an average of 8.2 million viewers, almost double the equivalent episode of last year's series.

The BBC One sci-fi programme, which moved to a Sunday-evening slot in the schedule after previously airing on Saturdays, peaked at nine million viewers and had an audience share of 40.1%, according to overnight ratings.
