If You’re Looking After Your Health, And Your Teeth, Ditch The Sugar

Sugar is the enemy. Sugar sets you up for a whole host of illnesses that include diabetes, high blood pressure, eating disorders, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood sugar and - rotten teeth!

Eating sugar, especially the sugars found in candy, sweets, junk and processed foods, may make you feel good for a short time. You might feel satisfied, but it is a short term satisfaction. Sugar is a drug. You have it, you crave more, you get more, and sadly, you get ill. And then your teeth root!

Let’s talk about sugar from a point of dental health. There is a reason that the American Medical and Dental Centre, a dental clinic in Dubai, offers parents advice on caring for their children’s teeth. Dentists have seen too many young children with rotting teeth. There is no reason for this, except - sugar! And if kids are needing cavities and having dental decay when they are young, imagine what is going to happen when they’re older.

There are ways to satisfy sweet cravings without damaging your teeth and eating sugar. If you can get into healthy eating plans, for both you and your kids, you will start finding that you don’t want or need sugar. Your weight will be easy to control, you will find you have extra energy, your skin and hair will look good, your moods will be so much better, and your life will take on a better quality. Plus, your teeth will be fantastic!

A good dentist can help you look after your teeth, as well as helping you with cutting sugar out of your diets. A good dentist in Dubai, at the American Medical and Dental Centre, will assess your teeth at your appointment. He will be able to see, either from the build up plaque, the discolouration, or the need for fillings, what your diet is like. Without being judgemental in any way, a dentist will offer advise.

•     Cut out all sugary or fizzy drinks.
•     Limit your candy intake.
•     Brush immediately after candy.
•     Ditch the processed foods.
•     Use a toothpaste with fluoride
•     Eat liquorice, sweet, healthy and delicious.
•     Replace sugar with cinnamon.
•     Visit your dentist twice a year for check ups.

Sadly, the dental centre in Dubai see a lot of children coming in with cavities that need filling. Once a child has a cavity, there is no way to reverse it. Bad teeth can be genetic, so we cannot blame everything on sugar. But most cavities can be avoided with a healthy diet and good dental care.  Teach your children early on about dental care and about how damaging sugar can be, and not just for your teeth. Teach them to brush twice daily. Teach them to appreciate each visit to the dentist. And as a parent, be a good role model. It doesn’t help to tell your child they should not eat sugar while you snack on chocolates. It doesn’t help to tell your child that it is time for a dental appointment at the American Medical and Dental Centre, if you haven’t been for yours. Be a good role model!

Once you have sugar out of your life, you will find you don’t miss it. You will honestly find you feel better in every single way. Sugar has a detrimental affect on mood. The more sugar you eat, the worse your mood swings. Sugar has a detrimental affect on weight . The more sugar you eat, the more overweight you will be. And sugar is terrible for skin - yes, look at all the studies between acne, diet and sugar - and as we have said, sugar is the absolutely enemy of teeth.

A dentist in Dubai, especially at the AMDC, will gently explain to you and your child how to look after your teeth. There is no judgement and there is no blame if your teeth is not in tip top condition. It’s okay if you have been eating sugar for years. It’s okay if every school lunchbox or birthday party has been filled with sugary treats. It’s never too late to stop and change the way you do things. A good dentist at the dental centre in Dubai will help you along the way.

Twice annual dental check ups are a good way to get into good dental habits. We all forgot to brush our teeth from time to time! Sometimes we don’t take that dental floss on holiday! Sometimes, we forget our toothbrush on holiday! Or we forget to rinse with mouthwash. Or we eat sweets and chocolate. These things are all okay, in moderation. And nobody is saying that you should deprive yourselves of delicious sweet things all of the time or walk around with a toothbrush in your pocket. But keep things in check and to the best of your ability, look after your teeth in general and your all round dental and physical health.

Say no to fizzy drinks! It does not matter if they are sugar free or not. They really are dangerous, in so many ways. Rather make a natural iced tea at home. Get into the habit of drinking iced water, or hot lemon water. Drink natural orange juice or natural apple juice, and get great Vitamin C. Bite into that juicy fresh apple, eat a peach, or snack on nuts or liquorice. It can all be delicious, and healthy! And you will feel so good about yourself too!
