Know Your Scheme

Launched in September 2018 under the aegis of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)

Consists of two initiatives: (1) The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY); and 2) The establishment of 1.5 lakh Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs)

PMJAY is a health insurance scheme aimed at providing access to inpatient secondary and tertiary care to poor and vulnerable families and reducing out-of-pocket health expenditures

The Health and Wellness Centre initiative aims to transform 1.5 lakh Health Sub Centres and Primary Health Centres– the first point of contact to primary healthcare – to Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs) by 2022

Government of India’s flagship programme for early child development, aiming to improve the nutritional and health status of children aged 0 to 6 years, pregnant and nursing women

The scheme aims to reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition, and school dropout, as well as enhance the capability of mothers to look after health and nutritional needs of their child

Launched in 1975 in 33 districts and universalised in 2005

Implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)

Government of India’s flagship rural drinking water supply scheme

Previously called the National Rural Drinking Water Mission, it was restructured and subsumed to form the Jal Jeevan Mission

Among its targets is ensuring at least 90% of rural households are provided with Piped Water Supply by 2022

Launched in 2009 by expanding the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP)

Implemented by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS)

Previously called the National Rural Drinking Water Mission, it was restructured and subsumed to form the Jal Jeevan Mission

Aims to provide safe and adequate water for drinking, cooking, and other domestic needs on a sustainable basis

Government of India's flagship scheme to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household that demands work

Launched in 2006 following the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005

Implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD)

GoI’s flagship school-based feeding programme aimed at improving the nutritional status of students and promoting the universalisation of elementary education.

Launched as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) on 15th August 1995

Focuses on enhancing enrolment, retention and attendance of children while simultaneously improving nutritional levels

Government of India's largest public health programme

Aims at achieving universal access to health care by strengthening health systems, institutions and capabilities

Consists of two sub-missions: National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), and National Urban Health Mission (NUHM)

Launched in May 2013, and has been extended to 31 March 2020 

Implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) 

Government of India's flagship scheme to provide all-weather road connectivity in rural areas

Envisages connecting all habitations with more than 500 residents in the plains, and more than 250 residents in hilly, tribal and desert areas

The first phase, still running, focuses on new construction and upgradation of roads, the second phase focuses on upgradation of existing roads based on their economic potential

Implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD)

Government of India’s (GoI's) maternity benefit scheme providing conditional cash transfers to pregnant women and lactating mothers for the first live birth

At the national level, the scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD). At the state level, the scheme is to use the Anganwadi Centre (AWC) platform under the Women and Child Department or Social Justice Department.

Government of India's flagship ‘Housing for All’ scheme

Aims to provide monetary assistance for the construction of a pucca house with basic amenities for all houseless families, and those living in dilapidated and kutcha houses by 2022

Launched in November 2016 after restructuring the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY), a rural housing scheme started in 1996

Run by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD)

Government of India's flagship programme that aims to holistically address the prevalence of malnutrition in India through the use of technology, convergence, behavioural change, training, and capacity building.

Earlier known as the National Nutrition Mission, it was launched in March 2018

Its goal is to reduce malnutrition in a phased manner and bring it to 25% by 2022.

Also targets other indicators such as underweight and low birth weight prevalence, and anaemia among women and children

Implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development

Income support scheme by the GoI in which small and marginal farmers get up to Rs. 6,000 per year to supplement their financial needs. 

Supplements farmers’ financial needs to secure proper crop health and appropriate yields

Came into force with retrospective effect from 1 December 2018

Run by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare (MoAFW) as a Central Sector Scheme (CS). Read more about the scheme here.

Government of India's flagship programme

Aimed to ensure food security through the supply and distribution of foodgrains and other essential commodities

In 2000, Targeted PDS was expanded with the launch of two more schemes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Annapurna scheme

Antyodaya Anna Yojana provided one crore of the poorest families in India, food grains at a highly subsidised rate

Annapurna scheme provided food grains per month free of cost, to
senior citizens not covered by the National Old Age Pension Scheme

In 2013, the enactment of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) made the provision of adequate quantities of quality food at affordable prices and ensuring nutritional security a right

Was Government of India's flagship secondary education programme

Aimed to enhance access to secondary education and improve quality

Launched in 2009, and merged with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Teacher Education to form Samagra Shiksha in 2018

Implemented by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)

Government of India's flagship school education programme extending from pre-school to senior secondary classes in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for education

Launched in April 2018

Created by integrating the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), and Teacher Education (TE) 

Implemented by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)

Government of India's flagship scheme to rehabilitate identified manual scavengers and their dependents to alternate professions

Launched in 2007

The scheme mandate was slated to end in 2010. In November 2013, GoI revived the scheme and increased its scope, by widening the definition of manual scavenging and enhancing the entitlements available to identified beneficiaries. 

Run by the National Safai Karmacharis Finance and Development Corporation (NSKFDC), a GoI owned, not for profit undertaking, under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE)

Government of India's flagship rural sanitation programme

Aims at providing access to sanitation facilities and eradicating the practice of open defecation by 2019

Launched in 2007, after the restructuring of the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan

Administered by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS)

Government of India's flagship urban sanitation programme

Among its objectives is to eliminate open defecation by 2019, ensure 100 per cent collection and scientific processing of Municipal Solid Waste, convert insanitary toilets to pour flush toilets, and eradicate manual scavenging

Launched in 2014

Administered by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA)

Was Government of India's flagship elementary education programme

Aimed to provide universal education to children between the ages of 6 to 14 years

Primary scheme for implementing the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE)

Launched in 2001, and merged with Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Teacher Education to form Samagra Shiksha
