There are a lot of good qualities of box braids but when it comes to doing it on your own, the task seems a bit intimidating (especially to novices who have no experience in braiding). What amount of hair should I install? How voluminous does my hair need to be if I want to box braid it? How do I take care of box braids? Well, there are so many questions that may come to mind when thinking about doing box braids. Fret not! If you are planning to create this look on your own, you have come to the right place. In this post, we’ll teach how to do box braids like a professional hairstylist. Let’s get started.

1. Prep Your Hair

Most ladies wash their natural hair and then comb it thoroughly to detangle all the stubborn knots. However, detangling your hair post washing and conditioning can result in a lot of hair breakage and damage. Since it is your natural hair that you have to add the extensions to, it is advisable to detangle your natural hair thoroughly before you wash them. Once you are done with brushing, wash your curls (you can use any shampoo as long as it is sulfate-free).

The next step to prepping your hair for the box braids installation is deep conditioning your tresses with moisture-rich hair conditioner, especially the lower section of your hair. Conditioning your hair is essential as it cleans your hair and makes it frizz-free.

2. Braiding Your Hair

Box braids are pretty simple to do. As long as you know the three-strand braiding technique, you are good to go. Divide your hair into four equal sections in front of a mirror (the sectioning part should begin from your forehead and go all the way down to your neck). Split all the four sections into smaller parts, depending on the volume and thickness you want. Once you have sectioned and sub-sectioned your hair, it is time to grab hair extensions and kick start the braiding process. Here’s how to do it: (Note: this method is different from the knotless box braid method).

●    Get a sealant and place it on the strand of your natural hair that you are about to braid. Grab hair extensions and combine the first half of your hair strand with the leg of the extension. Similarly, blend your own hair with the other legs of the hair extensions.

●    Start plaiting your hair extensions with your natural hair (braid your tresses from the root to the tip). Make sure to hold your natural hair firmly so that it doesn’t slip when you braid it with the extensions.

●    Keep braiding your hair until you run out of hair.

●    Repeat this process to braid all four sections of your hair and continue braiding until all the strands are braided. Do not forget to secure the ends of each braid with a rubber band.

●    Note that the braids you make should not be too tight to hurt your scalp or natural hair. Neither should it be too loose to flyaway. Try to keep the tightness of your braids balanced.

3. Trim flyaways

In order to make your braids look smooth and well-defined, trim. Trimming flyaways is important as flyaways can cause inconsistency in your box braids. Hence, grab a sharp pair of scissors and cut the extra hair. Make sure to do this step cautiously and in front of the mirror so that you don't end up cutting the strands of your natural hair.

4. Seal in the Moisture

Box braids are long-lasting hairstyles that can last for up to weeks if maintained properly. The first step to maintaining your box braids is to secure its ends. Get a bowl filled with hot water and dip the ends of each braid into the bowl to seal it tightly. Spray your box braids with the moisture-rich sheen spray and get it secured.

Today, box braids are considered one of the go-to hairstyles for people preferring protective hairstyles. Besides giving a perfect definition to your hair, box braids are known for their low maintenance requirement as well as long-lasting nature. So why not try this versatile hairstyle? Follow the steps and box braid your hair like a pro.
