Spurs news on San Antonio having the best record in NBA over the last 20 seasons.

San Antonio Spurs News: A lot has been said about the Spurs as a franchise. People see them as the standards of excellence, and with good reason. Over the past two decades, San Antonio has the highest winning percentage among the 30 NBA teams, which speaks volumes about how well run, well managed, and well coached they have been during that span.

Since 1998, the Spurs have won five NBA championships, and even in seasons when they aren’t considered as a legitimate title contender, they still finish with an impressive record. Last season, they managed to finish with a 48-34 record, good for seventh in the Western Conference, and the Denver Nuggets, who finished second, needed a full seven-game series to take them down.

They are still being led by arguably the greatest NBA coach of all-time, Gregg Popovich, and a significant part of their success can be credited to the trio of future Hall of Famers; Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili. Even now-Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard has played a key role in San Antonio’s last championship win back in 2014.

But with Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, and Leonard gone, and with Popovich at the tail-end of his coaching career, questions have started to pop up on whether or not the Spurs can maintain this level of excellence. Sure, their scouts are still able to find gems in the draft and their player development program is still one of the best in the league, but without a bonafide superstar, how good can they be in the long run?

Yes, there’s still All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge and versatile forward DeMar DeRozan to lead the charge for San Antonio, but at this point, we already know that those guys can’t lead them to a title. They will still be a pretty good team next season, but that’s about it.

So, will the Spurs remain an NBA powerhouse three to five years from now? We’ll just have to wait and see.
