A Tribute to Karl Lagerfeld - the Emperor of Fashion

Karl Lagerfeld, one of the world's most iconic fashion designers, who spent decades as the creative director of Chanel, died Tuesday, February 19, in Paris. He was 85 years old.

For most of his life, Lagerfeld was one of the world’s most visible designers. He was the creative mastermind behind Chanel since he joined the company in 1983, and worked as the creative director of the Italian fashion house Fendi. Despite his name being synonymous with high fashion, he didn't shy away from simplicity and was the first haute couture designer to collaborate with a fast-fashion company.

Lagerfeld was notoriously restless and even old age couldn't stop him from continuing his vision and his influence on the fashion and beauty industry has been monumental - to say the least.

And yet, despite his glamorous life, Lagerfeld remained rather unimpressed with his fame. Just two months before his death, he stressed how little his legacy meant to him. Dismissing rumors he was working on his memoirs, this is what he had to say:

Understandably, the millions of people he touched throughout his life, didn't share his lack of enthusiasm and immediately following his death, an outpouring of love hit the internet and thousands paid tribute to his genius and the legacy he leaves behind.

Lagerfeld was known to have an extremely outspoken personality and had opinions on everything, never shying away from possible controversy. He strongly believed in going his own way, paying little attention to what others thought of him.

He never forgot sight of who he was.

He believed in always reinventing oneself.

He knew how to go his own way.

Most importantly, he always celebrated the beauty in being different, in being strange.

Lagerfeld also never took himself too seriously, famously saying of his trademark look consisting of dark suits and leather gloves with a signature white pony-tail and tinted sunglasses: "I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that."

Without a doubt, the Emperor of Fashion will be dearly missed.
