The Wild Thing stuns the golf world

John Daly was the ninth alternate at the 1991 US PGA at Crooked Stick Golf Club, but fate played into his hands and on the first day's play he was teeing it up, despite not having even played a practice round.

After Nick Price pulled out for the birth of his first child, Daly hired his caddie, Jeff "squeaky" Medlen.

His inspired mullet haircut and underdog status endeared him to the crowd, and he dominated the golf course with booming drives and a deft touch to the galleries' delight.

After 36 holes he boasted a lead, and he never looked back. Daly won by four strokes, his first of two major wins.

"This is like a miracle," he said. "It just doesn't happen that often."

Tiger wins third leg of Tiger Slam

Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus were paired together for the opening rounds at Vahalla in 2000, as the Golden Bear made his US PGA swansong.

The 18-time major champion needed an eagle to make the cut on the 36th hole, and almost achieved the feat when his approach missed by inches.

Woods was the leader going into the weekend, but journeyman pro Bob May was a mere stroke behind before the final round.

The pair shot bogey-free 31s coming in, with the world number one holing a nervy five-footer to force a play-off.

On the first extra hole, Woods famously chased his birdie putt as it rolled towards the cup, pointing at his ball as it dropped.

He held on to win his third major in a row, and went on to win the Masters the following year to complete the Tiger Slam.

"It was an incredible battle," said Woods.

"We never backed off. Birdie for birdie, shot for shot, that's as good as it gets."

Harrington drains monster putt for win

Padraig Harrington was on a run. He arrived at Oakland Hills in 2008 having lifted the Claret Jug just three weeks before, adding to his victory at the Open 12 months previous.

But his bubble was burst at Oakland Hills when he found himself on five-over par after two rounds, six shots behind leader JB Holmes.

The Irishman re-grouped and shot two rounds of 66 over the weekend, clawing back eight strokes, to finish two ahead of runners-up Ben Curtis and Sergio Garcia.

Needing just par to win on the 18th hole, he drained an 18-footer to assure he didn't drop a shot.

"I really do like the fact that no other European has won two majors consecutively, though, because I hold a lot of European players who I grew up watching in high esteem. To believe that I achieved something that they hadn't is very special." he said.

Harrington also became the first European to win the PGA Championship in 78 years (Tommy Armour in 1930), and was the first winner from Ireland.

Yang floors Tiger

When YE Yang went toe-to-toe with Woods at the 2009 US PGA, few expected the South Korean to come away with the spoils.

Woods' record when boasting a 54-hole lead in a major read won 14, lost none - intimidating to say the least. But the world's number one player was stunned when Yang found another gear coming down the stretch.

On the 14th hole, the 37-year-old holed out for eagle to take a one-stroke lead. He held his nerve on the final hole, stiffing his hybrid approach shot to become the first Korean male with a major to their name.

"I tried to keep my emotions under control on the course, but I will have a crazy party tonight," the winner said afterwards.

A disconsolate Woods said: "I played well enough to win the championship, but I didn't putt well enough to win the championship. It was a bad day at the wrong time. That's the way it goes."

Rory wins by record margin

Rory McIlroy blew away the US PGA field in 2012 to claim his second major championship, adding to his US Open victory the year before.

At Kiawah Island, the Northern Irishman finished eight shots clear of runner-up David Lynn, beating Jack Nicklaus's record winning margin of seven strokes in 1980.

On the last hole, he drained a 25-foot birdie putt to move to 13-under for the championship.

"I don't think I have let it sink in yet - I am speechless," he said. "It means an awful lot to look at the names on that trophy and put mine alongside them."

Day enters the record books

Jason Day won the US PGA at Whistling Straits with a major record score of 20-under par in 2015.

Day carded a final round of 67 to win his first major by three strokes, breaking Woods' major record score of 19 under at the 2000 Open.

Having previously recorded nine top-10s in the majors, there was understandable emotion from the talented Australian.

"I didn't expect I was going to cry," said Day.

"A lot of emotion has come out just because I've been close so many times and fallen short."

Day's 20-under total in a major has since been matched by Henrik Stenson at the 2016 Open Championship.
