What To Expect From CES 2017
The world's largest tech show returns with a lot on new trends as well as some we thought were dead.
CES will have gadgets and gizmos a-plenty. Companies will show off who's-its and what's-its galore. But what just what trends will have us wanting more? CES 2017 looks like it will be the year of evolution with a number of technologies getting better and a few things we wrote off trying to make a go of it one more time.

Smart Home Tech
The "smart home" has been something that is a staple of CES, but with the Internet of Things (IoT) the products have really stepped things up. This means that the smart home is, well, actually getting smart.
We've seen fridges with internet connections, but we expect to see a lot of smaller devices and kitchen-counter appliances to get some sort of connected app. Not sure how useful any of these things will be, but expect hackers to make news in 2017 for taking over your blender.

Digital Assistants That Work
Google, Siri and Cortana are all fun little things, but they were only the first step in our new connected world. Asking for the weather or where the nearest gas station is was all well and good, but this year we expect some serious hardware that better understands people's needs. This last year we saw a ton of home assistants from Google Home and Alexa doing a lot to push the tech forward.
The real magic of these devices was that there were affordable for the average consumer. Some of the tech used in these devices will find their way into 3rd party devices and there will also be brand new tech that looks to make your life easier. Expect every other item at the show to try and "help you" in some way . Artificial Intelligence is the future, but let's just hope 2017 isn't the year SkyNet takes form.

HD Audio (Again)
High definition audio has claimed to be "the next big thing" before, but 2017 seems to be the year it tries to make headway once again. It's such a big deal this year that there will be an entire high-resolution audio area showing off just how good HD audio can be.
I currently have an LGV10 that feature HD audio via headphones, but to be perfectly honest I really can't tell the difference. And that just the thing that keeps HD audio fromconnecting with people. It's hard to get consumers onboard and pay lots of money for something only trained audiophiles can hear. There will also be tons of high-end speakers on display as well, but how bad do you really need to hear Taylor Swift in super HD?

AR And VR Get Easier And Cheaper
The VR revolution is here, even if the quality offerings still cost an arm and a leg. Google announced a second generation VR device and a number of companies will be fettering new takes on this now established technology. Voxel is even claiming to offer a VR solution without the need of a headset! But even bigger is news that the porn industry will be at CES showing off there VR offering. You've never seen awkward until you see a bunch of males nerds huddled together looking at VR porn.
One cool thing will be the plethora of 360 cameras that will let your friends and family check out where you are through their own Cardboard compatible devices. My email is full of requests to check out streaming 4K 360 degree cameras. Not sure how many people want to see my messy office on 4K, and I'm in no mood to get yelled at by my mother via VR about it.

Self-Driving Cars
Car tech has always had a place at CES and we even got to be driven around in an atonomus car back in 2015. The Gold Lot is where all the major players will be giving demos of their electric and smart cars and we expect all the big names to be there including BMW, Ford, Chrysler, Fiat, Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai. There will also be companies showing off their technology like a new "smart" steering wheel and in-dash holo displays.
But the biggest news this year in the car space comes from Faraday Future, the highly controversial car company that failed to make the splash they hoped to make at CES 2016. They have been teasing the release of their first electric car all week, but critics are worried as major executives have bailed on the company over the past few months. The company also halted construction on its North Las Vegas plant that is hoping to bring a possible 9,000 jobs to the community. CES 2017 will really be the event that makes or breaks Faradays future.

4K And 8K Televisions
3D televisions are dead. It's was a nice gimmick, but people never really took to the technology, no matter how much everyone pushed it. While CES 2017 will feature a number of old-fashioned non 4K televisions, they are going to be pretty hard to find. The push is going to be into 8K, although I have serious issues that most consumers may stay away as the human eye is only so good. In fact, the human eye is sort of crap when comes to seeing the world in HD.
4K makes a lot of sense and we expect 99% of the televisions on display to feature the technology, and with the price going down it does feel like 2017 will be the year of 4K, at least on the consumer level. Another big thing is HDR that CES has been pushing for the last few years. Streaming platforms are finally supporting the technology and with most televisions getting in on the fun, odds are if you buy even a lower end television in 2017 it will feature HDR capabilities. It might not make the pictures truly better on the low end, but manufacturer will still tell you it will.
