In a recent interview with People Magazine, former president George W. Bush discussed our favorite photos of his friendship with former first lady Michelle Obama.
Bush discussed how they first became friends through humor, saying:
She kind of likes my sense of humor. Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like.

He went on to discuss their relationship further and how being seated together at events brought them together personally.
I probably have a few wise cracks and she seemed to like it okay. I needle her a little bit and around her, I’m fairly lighthearted. [The Obamas] are around serious people all the time and we just took to each other.

But the two have more than just good humor in common. Bush has been working on an exhibit and book of portraits he has painted of post-9/11 veterans called Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors as well as additional projects supporting veterans' healthcare and well-being since leaving office. Michelle Obama has also worked to support military personnel, families, and veterans through her project with Jill Biden "Joining Forces." Bush and his wife Laura hope to work more with Michelle Obama to promote veteran and military welfare in the future.
I think they’re interested in, also, doing things with our troops of course now in their after-life, as I call it.
