At the age of 33, Melissa Kayser had spent three years and thousands on IVF treatments and had experienced the heartbreak of nine miscarriages. After exhausting all of her options, she had one remaining chance to have a baby: using a surrogate.
I didn’t know if I could emotionally handle another woman being able to carry my child.

But when her older sister, Lisa Auten volunteered to act as her surrogate and carry a baby for her, Kayser decided to give it one last try. Although doctors thought it unlikely that both of the embryos would survive, nine months later, Auten gave birth to her sister's twin daughters, Tierney and Ashlynn.
Although Auten is listed as the girls' mother on their birth certificate, in six months, she will be able to give up parental rights and allow her sister to adopt her children. Auten says the adoption will go smoothly and that she is overjoyed to give her sister the family she always dreamed of.
I never saw myself being a mom. I enjoyed being pregnant, but the experience has not changed my mind. I am just fine being an aunt.

And Kayser says that she'll never be able to repay her sister for giving her her daughters.
Every day I am in awe. You hear women say you don’t really know love until you have children. They complete me. There’s never any words that I can say to thank her for what she did. She gave up a year of her life so that we could have a family.
