There were only about 250 visitors in the Louvre when underneath the world famous Parisian museum, in the Carrousel du Louvre, a man armed with a machete rushed a group of soldiers. One of the soldiers suffered a minor injury to their scalp, but for the most part, the assailant was prevented from doing any further damage by another soldier, who fired five shots, badly injuring him in the stomach and preventing any further action.
The unidentified attacker had no identifying documents on his person when he was arrested by police and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Although he carried two backpacks, no explosives were found in either, although a possible other weapon was found on his person. After a lockdown on the museum that lasted several hours and the arrest of one other suspect, the museum was finally cleared and the tourists visiting were set free. French President Francois Hollande spoke about the incident, saying:
I salute the courage and determination showed by the military this morning at the Carrousel du Louvre.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo further commented on the incident, praising Parisian readiness to meet security threats:
In this context of terrorist threat that concerns every big city in the world, we saw how efficient and relevant Paris security features were.
