The 39 Steps (1935)

Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1935 thriller, loosely based on John Buchan's novel, was filmed and set almost entirely in Scotland. Although absent from the book, the scene where main character Richard Hannay escapes from a train on the Forth Bridge is easily the film's most memorable. Real shots of the Forth Bridge did make the final cut, though close-ups used a scale model of a section of the bridge near a railway line in Hertfordshire. Interior shots of Waverley Station were also used in the film.

2

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969)

1930s Edinburgh is convincingly portrayed in this masterpiece adapted from Muriel Spark's best-selling novel. A young Maggie Smith plays a wonderful Jean Brodie in this must-see flick. Henderson Row and Edinburgh Academy - location of the Marcia Blaine School for Girls in the film - feature prominently. Other filming locations include the Grassmarket, Edinburgh Castle, and the Royal Museum on Chambers Street.

3

Chariots of Fire (1981)

Based on a true story, this inspirational movie directed by Hugh Hudson centres around the trials and tribulations of two young British athletes aiming to compete at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. One of the athletes happens to be Edinburgh boy Eric Liddell, and the film features plenty of his home city - not including the famous Vangelis-soundtracked beach scene, which was filmed in St Andrews.

4

Restless Natives (1985)

A lot of fun and very, very of its time, Restless Natives centres around two young Edinburgh teens who take to a life of crime, holding up tour buses in the Scottish Highlands while wearing silly masks. Central Edinburgh takes centre stage in plenty of key scenes, but perhaps most notably the film offers up a movie cameo for Wester Hailes.

5

Shallow Grave (1994)

A top-notch effort by a then unknown director. This hugely-enjoyable black comedy was Danny Boyle's directorial debut and also marked the first starring role for Ewan McGregor. Scenes are mostly focused around a flat in the city's New Town. North East Circus Place and Scotland Street are both featured.

6

Trainspotting (1996)

The quintessential Edinburgh flick and widely-considered to be one of the greatest British films ever. Irvine Welsh's tale of Edinburgh heroin addicts went on to become a cultural phenomenon. Like the book, most of Trainspotting is set in Edinburgh. However, much of the filming was done in Glasgow, and there are probably more shots of London than there are of Auld Reekie. Still, the movie's most iconic scene, the opening chase on Princes Street, has become one of the most recognisabe and parodied moments in modern cinema.

7

One Day (2011)

The film adaptation of the much-loved book by David Nicholls about a couple who meet on the same day every year for twenty years before finally falling in love. One Day's critical reception was lukewarm, though the film does manage to exude a certain charm. Edinburgh's Old and New Towns feature prominently, while some of the most memorable scenes were filmed on Arthur's Seat.

8

Filth (2013)

Upon the film's release, lead actor James McAvoy predicted "there will be people who walk of the cinema, I'm sure". Having sat through Filth few would disagree with that. While the film, a dark comedy centred around a corrupt local police officer with a penchant for illicit activities, is hardly an advert for Edinburgh, the city its self looks superb!

9

The Railway Man (2013)

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman star in this extraordinary true story about an Edinburgh man who is haunted by his experiences as a POW during the Second World War. Calton Hill is featured in the film and on the official movie poster.

10

Trainspotting 2 (2017)

We're all champing at the bit for this one. The original cast, director and screenwriter are all back together, and if the early proclamations by Ewan McGregor and Irvine Welsh are to be believed, this could well prove to be the most successful film to have ever been set in Edinburgh. Filming was wrapped up in October and we've now seen the first official trailer. We've still little idea what route the plot will take, of course, other than it's loosely-based around the events in Welsh's book Porno. However, one thing is for certain, there will be plenty more Edinburgh scenes this time around, making up somewhat for the city's bit-part role in the first movie. Some of the scenes we've identified so far include Arthur's Seat, the West End, the Grassmarket, Brandon Terrace, Leith Walk, and Pennywell Road.
