Seizing his opportunity at a young age

Sebastian Vettel shot into the spotlight even before breaking into F1, when he was signed up by Red Bull at just 11 for his karting talents. The German maintained this trait throughout his career when his instant pace made him the then youngest driver to score a point on his F1 debut at the 2007 United States Grand Prix. Records carried on tumbling when he became the then youngest driver to win an F1 race in the 2008 Italian Grand Prix - which still remains Toro Rosso's only victory. This only continued when he became the youngest ever F1 world champion at 23 years and 135 days.

Multi 21, Seb!

The 'Multi 21' incident at the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2013 is one of the most infamous of Vettel's career. Running 1-2, Red Bull told its drivers to hold position to the end of the race with Mark Webber leading Vettel. Vettel defied the order and passed Webber for the lead before holding on for victory, fracturing the relationship between them. It was an act of defiance, but one that proved the lengths Vettel was willing to go to in order to win.

Dominance at the front

Vettel can also be untouchable on his day when running up front, perhaps best illustrated at the 2013 Singapore Grand Prix. Vettel enjoyed a comfortable lead at the front before a safety car period wiped away his advantage. The German dug deep, pulling away from the pack at two seconds per lap to re-create the gap. He eventually won the race by half a minute from Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

Up for a laugh

Away from the track, Vettel has also shown he has a cracking sense of humour. He regularly enjoyed throwing some curveballs at Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg when in press conferences with the pair at the height of their rivalry, but one of the best moments came at the Autosport Awards when Vettel impersonated future teammate Kimi Raikkonen. It's uncanny!

Teammate clash in Turkey

The Multi 21 incident was far from being the first incident between Webber and Vettel. Facing their first title fight together in 2010, the Red Bull pair came to blows in Turkey. Vettel was able to line up a pass and get side by side with Webber before duking across, causing contact between the two. They pointed the finger at each other, but Red Bull came off worst of all after giving up a comfortable position at the front.

6

A classic fightback in Abu Dhabi

Not all of Vettel's biggest moments in F1 have been controversial. His march to a third world title in 2012 came alive in the second half of the season as Red Bull made great strides with its car, but Vettel had to start from the pit lane in Abu Dhabi after running out of fuel on his Q3 in-lap. Vettel produced a stunning charge to third place in the race, coming home behind title rival Fernando Alonso. It was the drive that arguably won him a third world championship.

7

"You came in like a torpedo!"

A rather unexpected rivalry emerged in the early part of 2016 between Vettel and (then) Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat. The pair came to blows in China when Kvyat made a lunge on Vettel at the first corner, with the Ferrari driver saying he nearly caused a crash after coming in "like a torpedo"; Kvyat was non-plussed by the incident. The pair collided again in Russia two weeks later with two hits on the first lap eliminating Vettel on the spot and effectively ending Kvyat's Red Bull career, his demotion to Toro Rosso following soon after.

"Here's a message for Charlie: F**k off!"

Tensions spilled over for Vettel at last year's Mexican Grand Prix when Vettel found himself fighting with Max Verstappen for a place on the podium, resulting in a sweary exchange on the radio. Verstappen resorted to the grass at one point in order to stay ahead of Vettel, but was not penalised, prompting Vettel to tell FIA race director Charlie Whiting to "f**k off" over the radio. Vettel eventually passed Verstappen only to be given a time penalty for erratic driving, leaving him fifth in the final classification. The FIA investigated Vettel's rant at Whiting, but opted against taking any disciplinary action.

9

A legend in his time

The German's four F1 world titles speak for his place in the history books as he sits joint-third on the all-time most F1 world championships next to Alain Prost, only behind Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio. All that was achieved by the age of 26 which marks him out as a legend of his own time and in any era of the sport.

10

Dangerous driving in Baku

The latest incident that is currently being investigated by the FIA, Vettel saw red during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix eight days ago when he drove towards F1 title rival Lewis Hamilton while behind the safety car. A move seemingly meant to spook Hamilton in retaliation to an apparent brake test, Vettel made contact with his side swipe and was handed an in-race stop/go penalty. The incident underwent a review but the FIA decided a 'sincere apology' and commitment to be involved in FIA initiatives would suffice in lieu of a punishment.
